Bolstered by a second-place finish in A division, the University of Hawai'i finished fourth yesterday in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association North American Women's Championships at Cascade, Ore.

The Rainbows amassed 182 points — 77 in A division, 105 in B division — over the 13 races held at Columbia River Gorge.

Yale won with a low-best score of 154, followed by Harvard (175) and Navy (178). Eighteen schools competed in the three-day event.

Hawai'i's A division crew — Jennifer Warnock, Shandy Buckley, Cassandra Harris and Blaire Ladd — placed second overall with 77 points. They were tied with Tufts (75) entering the final race of the day. The Rainbows, who had won the previous race, finished sixth in the final race while Tufts, which had finished 14th in the previous race, placed fourth to edge UH by two points.

Hawai'i's B division crew — Renee DeCurtis, Barbara Clausen and Sarah Reed — placed seventh with 105 points. Stanford won with 74.

TRACK AND FIELD

Two Rainbow Wahine in finals: University of Hawai'i middle-distance runners Kelly Young and Dana Buchanan qualified for today's finals of the NCAA Western Regional at Matador Track in Northridge, Calif.

Young, a freshman from Lisarow, New South Wales, Australia, placed fifth in the 800-meter qualifying yesterday with a time of 2 minutes, 7.44 seconds.

Buchanan, a freshman from Beachburg, Ontario, Canada, set a personal best in placing 11th in the 1500 qualifying with a time of 4:28.67.

Buchanan also participated in the 800, but failed to qualify after placing 15th in 2:13.27.

Two other Rainbow Wahine — Tasha Monroe and Novelle Murray — competed in the finals yesterday.

Monroe, a junior from Markham, Ontario, Canada, placed ninth in the long jump with a leap of 5.84 meters (19 feet, 2 inches).

Murray, a sophomore from Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, finished 11th in the discus with 48.70 meters (159 feet, 9 inches).

SURFING

Kennelly advances in France: Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly overcame an injury to her ear and shoulder to advance to the quarterfinals of the Roxy Pro France yesterday.

Kennelly wiped out during a practice session yesterday morning, resulting in a cut on her left ear that required three stitches, and a bruised left shoulder. Officials were willing to postpone Kennelly's afternoon heat, but she chose to compete.

She defeated Australia's Samantha Cornish in the second round.

"My ear and shoulder were still painful when I surfed, but the doctors said I'm probably going to be in more pain (today) so that's why I decided to surf immediately," Kennelly said.

Three other Hawai'i surfers were eliminated. Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard, the current No. 1-ranked surfer, was upset by France's Caroline Sarra.

Megan Abubo of Waialua and Melanie Bartels of Wai'anae were eliminated in the second round.

BASEBALL

Vulcans earn honors: Hawai'i-Hilo's Kaliko Oligo and Johnny Dudoit have earned second-team Division 1 All-Independent League honors.

Dudoit, a junior, led the team with 35 RBIs. He went 39 games without committing an error at first base and committed only two errors while playing at third.

Chu, a sophomore, was third on the team with a .299 batting average and 12 stolen bases.
