Young broke her own school record, and picked up three points for the Rainbow Wahine, which is the first time UH has scored a point in the regional.
Young missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by one place, and less than a quarter of a second. The fourth-place and fifth-place finishers Nellie Hammons of Utah and Chinny Offor of Stanford were both clocked in 2:06.67. The top five advance to the nationals in Austin, Texas.
Hawai'i's Dana Buchanan, a freshman from Beachburg, Ontario, Canada, finished 11th in the women's 1500-meter final yesterday with a time of 4:32.20.
On Friday, Hawai'i junior Tasha Monroe was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 5.84 meters, and sophomore Novelle Murray placed 11th in the discus with a toss of 48.70 meters.
"We are very pleased with the results by all four of the participants," UH coach Carmyn James said. "We had three ladies make the finals and the other substantially outperformed her effort from a year ago."
SURFING
Kennelly finishes second: Sofia Mulanovich of Peru defeated Kaua'i's Keala Kennelly yesterday to win the Roxy Pro France in 6- to 8-foot surf at La Madrague Beach.
Mulanovich, who won her third straight World Championship Tour event, battled thunderous seas and rode only two scoring waves in the 30-minute final.
Giant sets washed both surfers from their positions at the beginning of the final and then prevented them from returning to the lineup until the half way mark. Mulanovich's two-wave heat total was enough to outpoint Kennelly, 7.60 to 3.80. Mulanovich won $10,000 and Kennelly earned $6,000.
Both finalists scored well earlier in the day to win quarterfinal and semifinal heats.
"We were so amped to take it to the next level in the final," said Kennelly, the world's No. 2-ranked surfer. "But the ocean had other ideas. We were pushing so hard all day, but I think in the end Sofia and I both had bad luck. ... you just gotta push on and that's what I tried to do."
GOLF
Shimozaki leads qualifier: Mariko Shimozaki shot a 4-over-par 76 at Kapalua's Bay Course yesterday to clinch a berth in the 2004 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.
Rose Pagan also qualified after shooting 80.
Co-medallists Kelly Nakashima and Desiree Ting, who both shot 75, declined their spots because of scheduling conflicts.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Punahou grads cash in: Three Punahou School graduates and their partners competed in the Serbia and Montenegro Open, which ended yesterday.
Sean Scott (and Todd Rogers) and Kevin Wong (and Eric Fonoimoana) both placed ninth in the Swatch-FIVB World Tour event, while Stein Metzger (and Dax Holdren) finished 13th.
Scott and Wong will each split $5,500 with their partners while Metzger will split $4,000.
