Age: 101
Profession: Retired accountant for Channel 2
Height: 5 feet 3
Weight: 105 pounds
Workout habits: He runs daily in the hallway to his apartment. He hikes in the mountains on Sundays with friends. He climbs the stairs in his apartment building. "I walk, I run every day. I measured 100 meters in the parking lot and I run back and forth."
When and why I started running: A Hawai'i resident since 1954, he has liked to run since he was a child in Austria. "In those days, you didn't walk to school you ran."
My good foods/bad foods: He eats a balanced moderate diet. Some favorites include cottage cheese, bananas and grapes. "I have abolished anything that is bad for me. I do not smoke. I drink only non-alcoholic beer."
My biggest motivator: Since 1998, he's competed regularly in track events at the Aloha State Games and the Senior Olympics, collecting gold medals as the only one in his age group. "Training for those events gives me some aim."
Biggest roadblock to fitness: Nothing. At Kaiser Permanente, the staff usually only sees him for checkups.
What saves my sanity: "I have a basically optimistic attitude. Disagreeable things, I simply disregard and go on to the next thing."
Advice for those in the same boat: "Do as I do."
