HONOLULU

Car hits man in wheelchair

A man in an electric wheelchair was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Nimitz Highway yesterday.

The 44-year-old Honolulu man suffered leg and head injuries and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. He was crossing Nimitz Highway near Sumner Street outside of a marked crosswalk when the sedan hit him, police said.

The driver, a 49-year-old Honolulu man, was not hurt in the 12:09 p.m. accident.

Police closed a portion of the busy highway in the westbound direction for three hours while they investigated.


18 apply for job as police chief

Eighteen people, including four from the Mainland, have submitted applications to be Honolulu police chief.

No names were disclosed. The application deadline was Friday.

Police Chief Lee Donohue is retiring at the end of June.


New Life Church planning move

New Life Church Honolulu will be moving into the former Empress Theater downtown, recently vacated by Calvary Chapel Honolulu.

The Christian church will have its first Sunday service at 10 a.m. June 6, led by Francis Oda, senior pastor. A dedication ceremony is planned July 3.

The new site is on the corner of Beretania Street and Nu'uanu Avenue.

Calvary Chapel Honolulu has moved to 'Aiea.


H-1 project topic of meeting

Those interested in the upcoming H-1 Lunalilo on-ramp demonstration project can hear more about it from the Department of Transportation tomorrow.

Set to begin in August, the three-month demonstration will close the H-1 Lunalilo on-ramp to traffic during morning rush hour. Westbound H-1 and Makiki motorists will still be able to use the H-1 Vineyard off-ramp.

The community meeting is at the Hawaiian Mission Academy Chapel, 1438 Pensacola St., from 7 to 8:30 p.m.


Trolley talk postponed

The Downtown Neighborhood Board will not hear a presentation by Kenneth Hughes, president of UC Urban, about his plans for a trolley system linking Aloha Tower with downtown Honolulu as listed on the board's agenda for Thursday.

Board chairwoman Lynne Matusow said Hughes has canceled his trip to Hawai'i. The presentation is expected to be rescheduled.

The board, which meets at 7 p.m. at the Pauahi Community Center, 171 N. Pauahi St., will elect officers for 2004-05 at the meeting.

Army band sets Waialua concert

On June 6 — the 60th anniversary of D-Day — the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division "Sounds of Lightning" Jazz Band will perform a free concert from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Waialua Bandstand in the Park.
