UH alum Ring wins in beach volleyball

Former University of Hawai'i player Jason Ring and partner George Roumain defeated Sean Rosenthal and Larry Witt, 21-12, 21-16, for their first professional beach volleyball title at the Huntington Beach (Calif.) Open yesterday.

Ring, who played at UH from 1996 to 1997, and Roumain, a former Pepperdine standout, are playing together for the first time this season in the Association of Volleyball Professionals Nissan Series.

Rosenthal and Witt beat Karch Kiraly and Punahou alum Mike Lambert, 21-17, 17-21, 21-19, in the semifinals earlier yesterday. Ring and Roumain defeated Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard, 21-19, 16-21, 19-17, to advance to the final.

Ring and Roumain split $14,500 for the victory and lead the series standings with 1,080 points after four tournament.

The series will stop in Honolulu Sept. 24 to 26.

Misty May and Kerri Walsh beat Barbara Fontana and Jennifer Kessey, 21-16, 21-15, for their 86th consecutive victory and 15th women's tournament title in a row.


SAILING

• UH advances: The University of Hawai'i coed team defeated Washington in a sail-off yesterday to advance to the winners' round of the ICSA North American Team Racing Championships at the Columbia River in Cascade Locks, Ore.

Hawai'i and Washington finished tied for fourth at 3-3 in Group B of the opening round-robin. The top four in groups A and B advanced to the winners' round. St. Mary's College won group A and Dartmouth led the qualifiers in Group B. Other schools in the winners' round are Harvard, Hobart/ W.M. Smith, Southern Cal, Georgetown and Brown.

The meet continues today.


SOCCER

• Used soccer balls wanted: The Mililani High School girls soccer team will be collecting old and used soccer balls that will be shipped to U.S. military in Afghanistan and distributed to children.

The last day to donate will be today during the Hawai'i Youth Soccer Association championships at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Look for the Mililani High School girls soccer banner on a tent near the tournament headquarters.
