Mililani Golf Academy instructor Jeff Ferry and amateur partner Bryan Edwards birdied the final four holes to win the Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship yesterday with a record score of 19-under-par 125.
Shane Hoshino and former University of Hawai'i golfer Matt Kodama closed with 64 at Pearl Country Club to finish a shot back. Defending champions Kevin Hayashi and Elton Tanaka (67) tied for third with Joe Phengsavath and Shannon Tanoue (64). Kevin Carll and Neal Takara took fifth.
Ferry and Edwards shot 65 in yesterday's best-ball format. They opened with a 60 in Monday's scramble format.
A 15-foot par putt on the 13th hole kept the momentum going and led to the closing flurry yesterday, according to Edwards, operations manager at SystemCenter Inc., his family's business. Ferry sank a 5-footer for birdie on the 15th. Edwards followed with another 15-footer, then chipped within a foot on the 17th for birdie.
Kodama, who won the State Amateur at Pearl earlier this year, birdied the final hole while Edwards and Ferry watched from the fairway. Ferry then knocked his approach shot to 2 feet and drained the putt to collect $2,000.
"Jeff said at the beginning of the week we had a chance to win," Edwards said. "I saw a lot of tough teams and was skeptical, but the putts fell."
Bridgestone's Del-Marc Fujita, who created the tournament in 2001, tied for sixth with partner Casey Nakama (66-130). Lance Suzuki and son Nathan (69) also shot 130, as did Regan Lee and Mike Kim.
