Autopsy awaited in Maui death

Maui police investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine why a 61-year-old Denver man stopped breathing yesterday during a snorkeling trip off Lana'i.

Investigators said the man was part of a snorkeling tour operated by the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Crew members were alerted of the problem about 1150 a.m. and took the man to Manele Harbor on Lana'i while trying to revive him.

From there, he was taken by ambulance to Lana'i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m.

Man allegedly had stolen check

A 26-year-old man was arrested at a Wai'anae bank yesterday after he allegedly tried to cash a check that was stolen from a 70-year woman during an earlier car break-in.

Police said the man went to the bank about 12:10 p.m. and tried to cash the check.

The teller's computer "flagged" the check as having been reported stolen. The teller contacted the account holder who confirmed the check had been stolen previously.

The man was detained until police officers arrived and arrested him for suspicion of forgery.

Robbery report is investigated

Police are investigating a report filed by a 25-year-old man who said he was robbed early yesterday morning near Kalakaua Avenue and the Ala Wai promenade.

The man said another man approached him, pulled a gun and demanded his property. The victim said the robber struck him from behind with a large revolver and then took his clothing.
