USS Crommelin officer honored

Lt. Courtney Minetree of the U.S. Navy was given the 2004 Captain Joy Bright Hancock Leadership Award last summer in Washington, D.C., for her service aboard the Pearl Harbor-based USS Crommelin.

The annual award is presented to two women — one officer and one enlistee — from the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard at the annual National Women Officers Professional Association Symposium.

Cmdr. Donald Hodge, Crommelin's commanding officer, said: "Her drive, determination, thirst for knowledge, and her strong desire to take care of her division all made Crommelin stronger."

HPU acting dean named to council

Dr. Carlos Juarez, acting dean of the College of International Studies and associate professor of political science at Hawai'i Pacific University, has been appointed to the board of governors of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council.

Juarez received his Ph.D. from UCLA and joined HPU in 1997. His research focuses on comparative political economy of developing countries.

He was a Fulbright scholar to Mexico in 2000 and a Fulbright senior specialist to the Czech Republic in 2003, and is president of the Fulbright Association Hawai'i state chapter.

Correction: Karl Fujii is 2004-2005 president of the University of Hawai'i Alumni Association. Mitchell Kaaialii is manager of First Hawaiian Bank's Manoa branch. Information in an item in a previous version of this column was incorrect.
