Williams carves up Sunset for perfect 10

Sai Smiley of Maui advanced through the first round of the 21st annual Xcel Pro yesterday at Sunset Beach.

Ross Williams of Hale'iwa scored a perfect 10 for a long tube ride to highlight the opening day of the 21st annual Xcel Pro presented by Sobe No Fear yesterday at Sunset Beach.

The Xcel Pro is considered the annual start of the famous North Shore surfing season.

The first round and half of the second round were completed in 3- to 6-foot waves.

Other standouts included 2002 Xcel Pro champion Fred Patacchia Jr., Joel Centeio, Hank Gaskell, Scotty Fountain and Makua Rothman.

Defending champion Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach and other top-seeded competitors had byes through yesterday's heats.

Contest officials have until Nov. 10 to run two more days of competition. For daily status of the event, call 596-7873.
