ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Hawai'i Theatre goes neon

Advertiser Staff

With a flick of the switch, the historic Hawai'i Theatre downtown performing arts center will shine anew tonight. The new neon marquee will be ceremonially lit, with celebratory music and dance.

"Light Up the Hawai'i" activities start at 7:30 tonight. The theater neon is turned on at 8 p.m. The Royal Hawaiian Band, vocalists Cathy Foy and Nina Keali'iwahamana perform, and there's chanting by Tony Conjugacion, and hula by Chinky Mahoe's Halau Hula O Kawaili'ula, as well as lion dancing, an installation of colors and even hot dogs at nearby Gateway Park.

FLOOD RECOVERY

Here are some pointers on picking up the pieces

If you were hit by last weekend's flash flooding, here are some tips from hurricane survivors on how to salvage your treasures:

Photographs: Wear medical supply gloves to remove photographs from plastic sleeves of photo albums and frames. If they are stuck to the frames, take off backing and let the photo dry until it can be removed. Make a "house of cards" of wet photographs so air can circulate around all sides. Don't touch the surface of photos, because the wet emulsion may smear. Consider scanning damaged photos into a computer and having the images digitally restored.

Books: Stand books upright and fan the pages to allow drying. To prevent the spread of mold, try freezing books, photos or fabrics, and thaw and treat them individually later. Put paper towels or blotting paper between pages of glossy books such as yearbooks. Do not apply weight.

"I'm overworked. I wish I had a day off where I didn't have to make decisions. It's a sacrifice."
