Still 'a lot of questions' in death of Maui man

WAILUKU, Maui — Memorial services will be held this weekend for a Maui man who died after a fight that might have stemmed from a traffic incident.

Shannon Manosa, 26, died from head injuries Saturday at Maui Memorial Medical Center, two days after he was involved in an altercation in the Pukalani Terrance Center parking lot.

Police are still trying to sort out the events that led to the fight. The 22-year-old Pukalani man who tangled with Manosa was questioned by police but has not been arrested, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.

Manosa's mother, Antoinette Waikiki, said her son had gone out that night to the Casanova restaurant and bar in Makawao town with a date and his cousin. Later, on the way to take his cousin home, he was following another car, she said.

Cuomo said words were exchanged between the occupants of the two vehicles, leading to a chase around Pukalani that ended in the shopping center parking lot at about 2:20 a.m. Oct. 28. He said police believe that only the two men were involved in the fight.

Manosa suffered a skull fracture but Cuomo said it is uncertain whether the fatal injury occurred from a blow or from hitting the ground.

Waikiki said that her son and the other man apparently were at Casanova at the same time, but that many other details are missing. "There are a lot of questions and no answers," she said.

Manosa had two sons, Dylan Smith, 3, and Chase Manosa, 2. He worked as a mechanic at Eddie Boy's Light & Heavy Repairs in Kahului.

Manosa also leaves his father, Darrel Waikiki; sisters, Michele Ramos and Crystal Waikiki; his grandmother, Barbara Manosa; and great-grandfather, Eugene Rodrigues. A wake will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at Ballard Family Mortuary, with a service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday at the mortuary, with cremation to follow.
