USA Rugby clinic set for Punahou

Hawai'i Youth Rugby will hold a USA Rugby Level I coaching development workshop at Punahou School on Nov. 20 and 21.

The cost for the clinic is $160, which includes a coaching manual, law book and polo shirt, as well as lunches and instruction. After Nov. 17, the cost goes up to $170. The clinic will begin at 8 a.m. each day.

The Level I clinic will cover principles of play, role of the coach, unit skills, back play, defense, organizing a practice, injury management and team skills.

Hawai'i Youth Rugby, the governing body for youth and high school rugby in the state, was formed this autumn.

"I was very excited to jump-start Hawai'i Youth Rugby," said Kevin Perry, the organization's chairman. "We look forward to providing coach education and national certification to our rugby coaches on the Islands. This is something that has been missing for rugby in Hawai'i for a very long time."

Pitching clinics set at Mililani High School

Reid Mizuguchi, a former Punahou and University of Southern California player, will conduc individual pitching clinics at Mililani High School beginning tomorrow. The 30-minute sessions will run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

There also will be clinics on Nov. 14 (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.), Nov. 20 (3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) and Nov. 28 (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.).

Pole Vaulting

McLean to conduct clinic at Maui High

Robert "Bubba" McLean, a St. Anthony (Maui) graduate and a finalist at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, will hold a clinic for pole vaulters Nov. 21 at the Maui High School track facility.

McLean, who went on to compete at the University of California-Berkeley, still holds the Hawai'i state high school record at 15 feet, 9 inches. McLean's personal best is 18-8ý.

The clinic will cover the fundamentals of the event and how to clear heights in a safe manner.

Daniel Ryland, another 2004 trials finalist, also will participate in the clinic.

The cost of the clinic is $100, and there are 20 spots available.

Everyone wins at Mililani harrier event

Everyone's a winner in the 10th annual Mililani Mauka Cross Country Invitational to be held today at Mililani Middle School.

The event, which will feature 360 participants from all schools in the Mililani Complex (grades 3 to 8), will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Boys and girls race separately for each grade level.

All participants will receive a ribbon at an awards ceremony.

Its purpose is to promote fitness, cardiovascular development, team spirit, and to encourage a healthy lifestyle.
