For the second consecutive year, University of Hawai'i senior midfielder Joelle Sugai was named to the first team of the Academic All-District VIII women's soccer team.
Sugai, a co-captain from 'Aiea High School, holds a 3.78 grade-point average in business. On Wednesday, Sugai, who leads the team in assists, was named to the Western Athletic Conference first team.
The academic award is voted on by collegiate sports information directors in each district.
District VIII consists of players from Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Hawai'i.
To be eligible, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, at least a sophomore in standing, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20.
Sugai has started every game for the Rainbow Wahine, a string of 80 consecutive matches.
She was the only Hawai'i athlete named to either the first or second team.
