The weather tonight might be gloomy, but there will still be a gathering of hot, specialty vintage vehicles as Hawaii Independent Cruise Night's monthly car show rolls on at Wendy's in Kapolei. It's free, and all are welcome to feast their eyes on the show of steely muscle, classic chrome and automotive elegance.

Classic cars, such as this '57 Chevy, will be on display tonight at the Hawaii Independent Cruise Night car show at Wendy's in Kapolei. Car, truck and motorcycle enthusiasts will gather for the monthly event.

Hawaii Independent Cruise Nights

The cruise night organization sponsors a number of shows, including an ongoing series at McDonald's restaurants islandwide. One event at Windward Mall drew about 400 vehicles; the cruise nights at Wendy's usually bring in 150 or more (there might be fewer tonight if it's rainy). Motorcycles, too, are welcome.

It's a chance to chat with the dedicated car owners, check out the engines and, well, take time out for a bit of nostalgia for when these vehicles ruled the roads.

Chuck Spainhower, who has had a number of vintage vehicles, including a rare 1949 Mercury two-door, is one of the organizers. Sorry, the Mercury won't be on display; tonight Spainhower will be driving his truck, which will be full of door prizes and car-show schedules.

And if you happen to have a vehicle that's pretty special, you can put it on display tonight, too. Just show up, Spainhower says.

CRUISE NIGHT CAR SHOW

6 p.m. today

Wendy's, 490 Kamokila Blvd., Kapolei, in front of Kmart

If the rain keeps you from attending tonight's cruise night, there are other opportunities: The next show is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the McDonald's in the Pearl Kai Shopping Center. Wendy's in Kapolei hosts the final cruise night of the year Dec. 11.

Log on to the Web site at www.hawaiiindependentcruisenights.com and expect to say "Wow!" as you check out the photos of the vehicles. Many are available for film and TV productions, and interested parties can make such arrangements through the Web site.

It's time to get together for a family portrait to send to friends and relatives for the holiday. And that includes the family pet, too, so bring those furry and feathery pals to the Hawaiian Humane Society's fund-raiser, "Pictures With Santa Paws," at which photographer Stan Wright will capture the moment on film. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, too.

For $20, you get one pose and four prints and four FujiFilm negatives mailed to your home, in time to make those custom holiday cards. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and tomorrow at the garden of the Hawaiian Humane Society, 2700 Wai'alae Ave. 946-2187, Ext. 225.

Mementos from 'Hawaii' up for sale

It's open to the public.

Web site offers oodles of cuddly feline features

Is the weather a little spotty today? There's always the Internet for G-rated entertainment. For instance:

Back in May we told you about a too-cute Web site devoted to dogs, www.dogster.com. They didn't forget about you cat lovers out there: Now there's www.catster.com, and it, too, is too cute for words. You'll just have to log on and see for yourselves (we love the wild photo of Paisley, from San Jose, Calif.).

Sunset events are canceled

Sorry, folks, this weekend's Sunset on the Beach events

in Waikiki have been canceled because of the probability of rain.
