UH wins in diving, swimming

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams dominated their opponents in the first day of the Big West Shootout at Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.

The UH men defeated UC Irvine (106-34), UC Davis (124-16) and Air Force (124-16). The women stopped UC Irvine (106-34), UC Davis (116-24), Air Force (121-19) and Pepperdine (119-19).

Andrew Affleck and Grzegorz Mroz finished first and second in the 1,650-meter freestyle and 500 freestyle. Affleck also won the 200 butterfly.

The UH women swept the first five spots in the 200 freestyle with Cassie Hunt leading the way.

Melanie Schlanger won the 50 and 100 free. Nicole Mackey took first in the 100 and 200 butterfly. Jessica Affleck and Bache' Atkins were the top two swimmers in the 500 and 1650 freestyle.

At Los Angeles, Hawai'i's QiongJie Huang won the 3-meter springboard diving event yesterday at the USC Trojan Diving Invitational.



CROSS COUNTRY

Hawai'i Prep sweeps Big Island titles

Hawai'i Prep, led by sophomore Keri Ogden, swept the first four places en route to a victory in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Cross Country Championships yesterday at HPA.

HPA's girls finished with a low score of 33 points, followed by Konawaena with 62. Ka Makani also won the boys title with 39 points, followed by Waiakea with 71.

Ogden finished the 2-mile course in 13 minutes, 25.20 seconds.

In the boys' 3-mile race, HPA's Emmett Weatherford finished first in 17:34.10.

HPA will host the state high school meet next Friday.



BASKETBALL

BYU defeats BYUH in exhibition

Mike Hall scored 16 points to lead Brigham Young to an 85-70 college exhibition victory over Brigham Young-Hawai'i in the first game between the two schools at Provo, Utah.

Jake Chrisman scored 25 points and Michael Stowell added 16 for BYUH, a NCAA Division II school.



GOLF

Souza falls short in Champions qualifying

Hawai'i's Stan Souza shot a 4-over-par 76 yesterday and finished tied for 43rd at 305 in a Champions Tour qualifying tournament at Calimesa, Calif.

Mark Johnson of Helendale, Calif., shot a 3-under 69 at the the PGA Southern California Golf Club Legends Course and was the medalist at 282. The low 17 finishers advanced to the final stage of qualifying.
