Manoa flood victims may get tax extension

Advertiser Staff

Manoa Valley residents and business owners cleaning up from Halloween weekend flooding may be able to get extensions or special consideration on their tax obligations.

The state Department of Taxation announced this week that it would consider requests for extensions on a case-by-case basis.

People should mark their returns "2004 Flood Relief" and also include an explanation of how they were impacted by the flood.

Taxpayers who were expected to file Hawai'i employers' withholding taxes by mid-November but cannot meet the deadlines because of the flood can have until mid-December.

Gov. Linda Lingle declared the area a state disaster so taxpayers may be eligible for a general excise tax exemption on insurance proceeds. Taxpayers may also be able to claim casualty loss deductions. Information is available on the department's Web site, or by calling 587-4242 or (800) 222-3229.
