Hawai'i Pacific sweeps Chaminade in volleyball

Nadica Karleusa had 14 kills and Flavia Brakling added 10 to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 30-23,

30-25, 30-23 non-conference women's volleyball victory over Chaminade yesterday at McCabe Gym.

Hawai'i Pacific, ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division II, is 18-2. Chaminade, ranked No. 25, is 15-6.

Valasi Sepulona led Chaminade with nine kills.

Vera Oliveira had five aces for HPU.

Hawai'i Pacific (8-1 in the Pacific West) can wrap up the conference title with a victory at Hawai'i-Hilo on Friday. Chaminade is 8-2 in the PacWest.



Western New Mexico takes 2 from UH-Hilo

Saint Francis alum Liz Narkon had 14 kills to lead Western New Mexico to a 30-17, 32-30, 30-22 Pacific West Conference women's volleyball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Silver City, N.M., on Friday.

Narkon, a sophomore outside hitter from Honolulu, had 20 kills yesterday in Western New Mexico's 30-16, 30-20, 31-33, 30-27 non-conference victory over UH-Hilo.

Western New Mexico is 20-10 overall, 5-4 in the PacWest. UH-Hilo is 4-19, 1-9.

Christina Cooley had nine kills to lead UH-Hilo on Friday. Cori Sutter had a team-high 12 kills for the Vulcans on Saturday.



SWIMMING AND DIVING

UH's Huang wins 2nd event at USC meet

University of Hawai'i's QiongJie Huang of Wen Zhou, Zhe Jiang, China, edged 2002 NCAA champion Blythe Hartley of Southern California to win the 1-meter springboard yesterday at the USC Trojan Diving Invitational at McDonald's Swim Stadium at Los Angeles.

Huang, who won the 3-meter springboard on Friday, scored 613.20 points yesterday to set a UH record. Hartley, who won a bronze medal in synchronized diving at the Athens Olympics, scored 613.15.

In the women's platform, Hawai'i's Rui Wang placed first with 501.35 points, followed by USC's Lindsay Draper with 425.80 and Huang with 421.70.



Hawai'i men, women continue winning ways

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed a sweep of their meets during the second and final day of the Big West Shootout at Anteater Aquatics Complex yesterday in Irvine, Calif.

The UH men (6-0 overall) defeated Washington (76-27), UC Santa Barbara (89-14) and UC Irvine (80-24). The UH women (7-1) defeated Washington (79-32), UC Santa Barbara (96-15), UC Irvine (82-31) and San Diego (97-15).

Melanie Schlanger, a freshman from Australia, set a UH women's record in the 100-meter freestyle in 49.49 seconds. Thomas Winkler, a junior from Germany, set a UH men's record in the 200 backstroke in 1:45.17.



CROSS COUNTRY

BYUH's Smith wins West meet, again

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Chelsea Smith won her second consecutive NCAA Division II West Regional Cross Country title yesterday at Bellingham, Wash.

Smith, the defending Division II national champion, finished yesterday's 6-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 42 seconds. Karen Dickson of Seattle Pacific was second in 22:07.

BYUH's women finished ninth out of 19 schools. Cal State Chico won the women's and men's meets. The NCAA Division II championship is Nov. 20 at Evansville, Ind.

The BYUH men finished 11th in a field of 17 schools. Jeremy Van Tress was BYUH's top finisher at 25th (34:22) in the 10-kilometer race. Mark Batres of Cal Poly Pomona won in 32:09.



SURFING

Five from Hawai'i advance in Xcel Pro

Hawai'i surfers Joel Centeio and Kekoa Bacalso were among the standouts advancing to the fourth round of the Xcel Pro presented by Sobe/No Fear yesterday at Sunset Beach.

The second and third rounds were completed yesterday in clean 4- to 5-foot waves.

Centeio had the best total of the day, recording a two-wave score of 16.5 in his third round victory. Bacalso had the best single wave score with a near-perfect 9.5 in his third round victory.

Other third-round winners from Hawai'i were T.J. Barron, Gavin Beschen and Hank Gaskell.

The biggest upset came in the final heat of the day, when defending champion Pancho Sullivan of Sunset Beach was eliminated.

Australians Luke Stedman and Jack Perry also recorded high scores to advance to the fourth round.

One more day of competition is required to determine the 2004 champion. Officials have until Wednesday to run the final day. For status of the contest, call 596-7873.
