'Incredibles' soars to the top

"The Incredibles" lived up to their name, and became the best Pixar movie opening ever. The story about a retired superhero family took to the skies with a $70.7 million opening, according to Exhibitor Relations, a box-office tracking firm.

Pixar's "Finding Nemo" debuted at $70.3 million; DreamWorks' "Shrek 2" is the best-opening animation film of all time, earning $108 million its first weekend.

"The Grudge" fell to third at $13.5 million, while "Ray" stood at second with $13.8 million. "Saw" dropped to fourth at $11.4 million, and Jude Law's remake of "Alfie" came in fifth at $6.5 million.

As he was sliding down the face of a 25-foot monster at Waimea one winter day, surfer/ photojournalist Rod Sumpter decided to write "100 Best Surf Spots In the World" (InsidersGuide/Globe Pequot, trade paper, $19.95), a surfers' travel guide. On that perfect wave that perfect day, he realized there is no such thing as the perfect surf spot: Memorable rides depend on a myriad of factors. The book includes color photos of each location (including 20 in Hawai'i), quotes, charts displaying average swell, climatic data and a "commitment rating" — a measure of the expertise and sheer guts required to tackle the surf spots.
