Rainbows' Kai semifinalist for player of the year

University of Hawai'i junior forward Natasha Kai was selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy, the official National Soccer Coaches Association of America Player of the Year award for Division I competition.

Kai, a Kahuku High alum, led the Rainbow Wahine in scoring with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points, and was named to her third straight Western Athletic Conference first-team honor.

Three men and three women finalists will be announced at the 2004 Men's College Cup in December. The Hermann Trophy, regarded as college soccer's version of the Heisman Trophy, will be awarded in January.


VOLLEYBALL

Rainbows remain at No. 2 in Top 25 poll

The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team remained No. 2 in this week's USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll, following a sweep of Fresno State on Friday.

Hawai'i (21-0) garnered two first-place votes and 1,537 total points. Washington, with a record of 20-0, remained No. 1 with 60 first-place votes and 1,620 points. UH and UW are the only undefeated teams remaining in the top 25.

The Rainbow Wahine play at the Stan Sheriff Center against San Jose State on Friday and Nevada on Saturday in Western Athletic Conference matches.


TENNIS

UH's Weinberg advances at Waikoloa

Bryon Weinberg defeated University of Hawai'i teammate Jarrod Diepraam, 6-1, 6-3, yesterday on the final day of singles qualifying at the USTA Waikoloa Futures on the Big Island.

Weinberg will face Nathan Prince in the first round of the tournament's main draw, which starts today at 9 a.m. at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Hotel courts.

Weinberg and Diepraam are also pairing up to seek a spot in the doubles main draw. They meet Kost Schiller and Markus Schiller in the qualifying finals.

Former Rainbow Warrior Malino Oda is also competing in the singles main draw.


BASKETBALL

UH men single-game tickets on sale

Individual game tickets for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball season and Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic are on sale.

Tickets are available at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office, over the phone at 944-BOWS, on the Internet at www.hawaiiathletics.com, the Rainbowtique at Ward Center, Aloha Stadium, the UH Campus Center and Windward Community College.

Ticket prices range from $3 for UH students to $20 for lower-level single seats.
