Managers urged to put aloha to work

Advertiser Staff

Ho'ohanohano — honor the dignity of others. Ha'aha'a — be humble. Kakou — togetherness and inclusiveness.

These are among the 19 Hawaiian values that local management consultant Rosa Say encourages managers to adopt in her new book, "Managing with Aloha: Bringing Hawaii's Universal Values to the Art of Business."

Say, a Big Island resident and a former executive of the Hualalai Resort on the Kona-Kohala coast and other Hawai'i resorts, discusses these Hawaiian values and cites her own experience in explaining how applying them in the workplace generates healthy productivity and success for businesses.

Say, who also quotes the philosophies of the late cultural historian George Kanahele, says that these Hawaiian values are universal and aligned with fundamental business principles.

"Managing with Aloha defines a Hawaiian sensibility for the work we do, and it is the polar opposite of the fear-based management that can weaken and destroy the ethical and humanitarian hopes we have for business today," Say writes.

"To be a great manager is to realize your success depends on the people you manage, and they are driven by their values just as much as you are. You have to respect their culture, and learn to speak the language of their values. In all likelihood, their values will match up with your own much more than you think."

Say is the founder of Say Leadership Coaching, a mentoring, coaching and training firm aimed at incorporating aloha to management and leadership.

"Managing with Aloha" will be available in bookstores Nov. 19. For more, visit www.SayLeadershipCoaching.com.
