Lobendahn endures Huskies' long season

Along with the loss of its football coach, the University of Washington's woes continued.

The Huskies lost to Arizona, 23-13, Saturday.

"We just gotta move on," junior linebacker Joe Lobendahn (Saint Louis '01 of Honolulu) said last week about the resignation of coach Keith Gilbertson. "There are things in life you aren't going to get. Just put it in the past and move on. You can't let that bring you down."

Lobendahn, a captain, recorded two solo tackles and four assists, and sophomore defensive end Brandon Ala (Kamehameha '02 of Wai'anae) had three tackles, including one solo, against Arizona.

"Our record (1-8 overall, 0-6 Pac-10) doesn't show that we're doing good," Lobendahn said. "We're going to try to win these last games for him (Gilbertson) and try to end on a good night, and build the momentum for us for next year."

Gilbertson will step down at the end of the season, ending an extremely difficult 15 months as a successor to Rick Neuheisel.

"I've been through it already, and now we have to face this," Lobendahn said. "It's been a roller-coaster ride for me since I've been there."

Senior center Keoki Fraser (Kailua '00 of Waimanalo) started for Arizona.

• Colorado linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) needs four more tackles to break CU's record for a freshman. Dizon, who has 64 tackles, recorded three in a 30-21 win over Kansas Saturday. He has two more games to set the mark.

• Virginia Union (Richmond, Va.) senior center William Lobendahn (Saint Louis of Pearl City) has been named to the All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association second team.

• Texas A&M Commerce junior kicker Ha'aheo Bento (Saint Louis of Honolulu) set a Lone Star Conference record with 18 field goals in a season, breaking the record of 17. His longest field goal was 44 yards, and he had 26 attempts.

Women's Soccer

• Two players from Hawai'i competing in the Ivy League received all-conference recognition.

Princeton junior defender Romy Trigg-Smith (Punahou '02 of Kailua) was named to the first team, and Cornell junior Kara Ishikawa (Iolani '02 of Mililani) was a second-team selection.

Trigg-Smith finished with a goal and two assists, and was the leader of a defense that allowed eight goals in 17 games. She also was named CoSIDA all-Academic District II second team.

Ishikawa scored four goals, including two game-winners, for eight points.

• Idaho State sophomore forward Jennifer Loo (Mililani '03) was selected to the All-Big Sky Conference first team. Loo started all 16 games this season, tallying 10 points on three goals and four assists.

• Brigham Young junior defender Charlene Lui (Punahou '02 of Honolulu) was named to the Mountain West Conference second team. It is the second all-conference second-team honor for Lui, who has played in all 22 games this season.

Men's Soccer

• Southern Methodist junior midfielder Duke Hashimoto (Iolani '02 of Kapolei) was named to the 2004 Academic All-America District VI Men's Soccer team.

Hashimoto carries a 3.55 grade point average in Real Estate Finance. He scored five goals and had three assists halfway through the season, but tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and underwent surgery, ending his season.

• Santa Clara sophomore forward Keith DeVey (St. Anthony '02 of Kula) was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII Team. DeVey has a 3.739 GPA, and has three goals and one assist this season.

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) senior forward Bobby Shinn (Pearl City '01 of Waipahu) was named to the Northwest Conference first team. Shinn had six goals and five assists for 17 points.

• Pacific Lutheran clinched its first Northwest Conference volleyball title since 1999, led by coach Kevin Aoki (Iolani '80). Aoki was selected as the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year for the second time.

• Two players from Hawai'i were named Northwest Conference honorable mention: Lewis & Clark senior outside hitter Jennifer Slaton (Punahou of Kailua) and Pacific freshman setter Anela Iseke (Kamehameha of Hau'ula).
