HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Kailua Bay OK'd for swimming

Advertiser Staff

City officials removed signs warning of polluted water at Kailua Beach yesterday afternoon based on water-quality samples analyzed by the state Health Department.

The signs went up Sunday after heavy rain caused about 5,000 gallons of rain-diluted raw sewage to overflow from a manhole along Wana'ao Road in Kailua and into Ka'elepulu Stream, which empties into the bay at the popular beach park.

Signs had been posted along Kailua Beach, the stream and most of Kailua Bay.

With bacteria now at acceptable levels, the near-shore waters of Kailua Bay are again safe for swimming and other activities.

Benefit Nov. 19 for UHH library

HILO, Hawai'i — The second annual "Night in the Stacks" fund-raiser for the University of Hawai'i at Hilo's Edwin H. Mookini Library will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 19.

The goal of the event is to raise $10,000 to create an endowed book account in honor of the late UH-Hilo chancellor Edwin H. Mookini. University librarian Linda Marie Golian-Lui said Mookini was a driving force in the establishment of the second largest academic library in the UH system.

Local author William Bergin will discuss and sign copies of his book "Loyal to the Land," with a portion of the proceeds from book sales donated to the Friends of the Edwin H. Mookini Library Foundation.

There will be hula and country line dancing, music by student Lani Anderson, student art exhibits, library tours, heavy pupu and nonalcoholic refreshments by students in the Hawai'i Community College food services program.

The Hilo Borders bookstore will set up a table where other Big Island authors will sign books from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with the company donating 15 percent of those sales to the Friends foundation.

A tax-deductible donation of $25 per person is suggested; UH students may attend for free. Friday is the deadline for reservations; contact Myrtle Hara at (808) 974-7568 or mhara@hawaii.edu.
