Quick exit for Futures' No. 1 seed

Advertiser Staff

Top-seeded Prakash Amritraj fell to France's Julien Cassaigne, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, yesterday in a 3-hour, 19-minute match at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Futures.

"I thought I played one of my best matches all year," Cassaigne said. "Maybe I wasn't hitting winners, but I just kept on fighting with the heat and he did too. We both wanted it very much."

Amritraj's father is Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj. Prakash is the first Indian tennis player since Leander Paes to qualify into an ATP tour event. He was MVP at the NCAA Championships in 2002, when he played for Southern California.

Qualifier Bryon Weinberg, a University of Hawai'i junior from Canada, fell to Nathan Price, 6-3, 6-3, yesterday. Second-seed Vladimir Pavicevic defeated Philip Gubenco, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the second round. Third seed Zack Fleishman also advanced in straight sets, as did No. 4 seed Wayne Odesnik and No. 5 seed John-Paul Fruttero.

Matches continue today at 9 a.m. Admission is free. Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday with the finals Sunday.

UH women's tourney on renovated courts

The newly renovated courts at University of Hawai'i will be the site of the inaugural Rainbow Wahine Tennis Invitational, today through Saturday.

The field includes 16th-ranked Texas A&M and No. 39 Arizona.

The Wildcats feature the country's top-ranked doubles team in Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands. Hollands is also No. 7 in singles.

The UH men will play UC Davis tomorrow on the new courts. It is the first of eight home matches over the next two months for the Rainbows.
