A 19-year-old Kailua, Kona man was killed Wednesday in a one-car accident on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway near Kiholo on the Big Island.
Police said Joshua Leau was headed south on the highway about 2:35 p.m. in a 1991 Acura and ran off the road when he tried to pass a tractor-trailer rig on the highway's southbound shoulder.
Police investigators said Leau was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from his car. He was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:52 p.m. Speed appeared to be a contributing factor in the crash, police said. Investigators do not know if alcohol or drugs played a part. An autopsy has been ordered.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Eric Cerezo of the Hawai'i County Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit at 961-2332.
A 47-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a robbery Sunday of the Kahala Mall Star Market branch of Bank of Hawai'i. A tip led to the arrest of the suspect who was identified by the teller who was held up, as well as two additional witnesses. Federal bank robbery charges are pending against the man, police said.
A 14-year-old Wai'anae boy was arrested on suspicion of first-degree escape after he bolted from his probation officer Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the boy was on a Family Court-approved outing and was in the custody of his probation officer when he ran away from the officer about 2:10 p.m. as the two were heading back to the Alder Street detention facility.
The probation officer ran after the boy, caught up with him and was assaulted by the boy but managed to return him to the facility, police said.
