The inaugural two-person $3,000 Swatch Hawaiian Classic beach volleyball tournament is accepting registration for the Nov. 20 to 21 event at Queen's Surf Beach in Waikiki.

The tournament will be hosted by three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly, and will feature 20 local men's and women's teams. The men will all be open, while there will be 10 women's open teams and 10 women's four-player teams. Kiraly will participate in a clinic and autograph session.

Registration is $25 per player. Participants can register at the Swatch Store at 2335 Kalakaua Ave., suite 104, in the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel.

The schedule: Nov. 19—Kiraly autograph session at Swatch Store, 5 to 7 p.m.; Nov. 20—main draw competition, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Kiraly clinic, 2 p.m. at feature court; Nov. 21—women's and men's finals, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

AUTO RACING

Hawai'i drivers will face Mainland foes

Hawai'i's Dean Freitas will try to defend his title against top Mainland auto racers at the second annual Hawaiian Sprint Car Classic today and tomorrow at the Hawai'i Motor Speedway at Campbell Industrial Park.

The Classic will feature top drivers from the United States Auto Club Southwest Sprint Car Series such as Charles Davis Jr., Dave Burns and Leighton Crouch racing against Hawai'i's top drivers, including Freitas.

Gates open at 5 p.m. on both nights. Two-day passes are available by calling race coordinator and general manager Jerry Apana at 630-0363.

Fans can watch races between Silver Crown Sprint Cars, Sprint Cars, Midgets and Ford Focus Midgets. The Classic will have food, USAC memorabilia, prizes, games and promotional giveaways.


BODYBUILDING

21st Paradise Cup muscles in today

The 21st annual Paradise Cup, featuring top professional bodybuilders, will be held today at the Sheraton Waikiki Hawai'i Ballroom.

Competition in this national qualifying event will begin at 7 p.m. Divisions are men's novice, men's master, women's open and men's open.

Professionals Art Atwood, Kris Dim and George Farah will appear.

Also appearing will be Shavis Higa, 1999 Mr. USA champion in bantamweight; Roland Aki, 1997 Mr. USA champion in bantamweight; Rey Ronquilio, 2003 Mr. USA champion in lightweight; and Johnny Ligsay, 2004 Mr. USA fourth-place finisher in bantamweight.

Free discussion on common injuries

A free sports clinic, discussing common sports injuries, will be conducted at the Straub Cafe (Straub King Street) tomorrow.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with lectures from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will feature Drs. Spencer K.Y. Chang, Andrew Montemayor, Edward J. Weldon III, and dietitian August Handshy.

Topics include: common running injuries, improving running techniques, maintaining the athletes shoulder, my aching back, proper nutrition for athletes, gels, bars, and sports drinks, healthy looking skin under the Hawaiian sun, and proper body mechanics.

CYCLING

Tour de Cure to help diabetes association

The Tour de Cure bicycle event, a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association's Hawai'i office, will take place Sunday at Kapi'olani Park. Bike riders of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend for a $45 registration fee.

Emphasized as a ride and not a race, the event offers cyclists a choice of two routes; a 25K route that runs through Hawai'i Kai, and a 50K route that travels to Waimanalo and back. A 75K route, which combines the first two, is also offered.

Snacks and drinks will be available at rest stops, and participants will enjoy music and food afterward by Outback Steakhouse.

EXTREME SPORTS

U.S. Wakeboard title will be up for grabs

Top-ranked Parks Bonifay of Lake Alfred, Fla., is one of the riders expected to compete in the Tige U.S. Open Wakeboard Championships tomorrow and Sunday at Wailua River State Park on Kaua'i.

Bonifay, 23, is the two-time defending Pro Wakeboard Tour champion and is No. 1 in the world on this year's tour. Also scheduled to compete is Tino Santori, the defending U.S. Open Champion.

A total of $25,000 is being offered by the contest, sanctioned by the American Wakeboard Association.

Eight riders have been invited and eight spots will be filled in an open qualifier tomorrow.

Wakeboarding features riders who use boards similar to snowboards. They perform tricks behind power boats that create waves. Riders also can slide and grind on rails and perform flips off various ramps.
