Futures' tennis seeds keep falling

One day after top-seeded Prakash Amritraj was eliminated, the second and third seeds were ousted yesterday from the Hilton Waikoloa Futures Tournament at the Kohala Tennis Club on the Big Island.

Teenager Phillip Simmonds, 17, with a big serve-and-volley game, survived five match points to upset No. 2 seed Vladimir Pavicevic, 6-3, 7-5, while Robert Yim ousted No. 3 seed Zack Fleishman, 6-2, 6-3, in second-round matches.

Joining Simmonds and Yim in today's quarterfinals were No. 4 seed Wayne Odesnik, No. 6 Horia Tecau, No. 8 Tres Davis, 18-year-old Scoville Jenkins, Tim Smyczek and Alex Kuznetsov.

Kuznetsov ousted No. 5 seed John-Paul Fruttero, 6-4, 6-4.

Rainbow Wahine open new complex with win

The University of Hawai'i women's tennis team defeated Texas State, 5-2, yesterday in its season opener. The match also marked the first games played on the recently renovated UH Tennis Complex.

Hawai'i's Lauren Fitzgerald eased past the Bobcats' Leja Sirola, 6-0, 6-1. The Rainbow Wahine also got singles wins from Sylvia Jaros, Justine Boutet and Kimberly Curtis.

Hawai'i hosts Arizona today at 2:30 p.m.


USTA Futures clinic a hit for school kids

About 70 Big Island kids from Parker and Kohala Elementary went to the Hilton Waikoloa Village courts Monday for the USTA Futures School Day.

The clinic has become an annual event, with students getting transportation, lunch and racquets from the USTA.

Hilton Waikoloa Village Director of Tennis Tim DiDonata was host. Prakash Amritraj, the tournament's top seed, helped with the clinic along with UH coach John Nelson, UH assistant Chad Skoloff, Hermann Fernandez and Ron Romano.


Kick-off party today for Honolulu Futures

There will be a kick-off party today for next week's Honolulu Futures Pro Circuit tennis tournament. The party will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.

Pro tennis players from around the world will receive their draw assignments at the party. Kaimuki's Chris Lam also will attend. Lam, who plays for UCLA, received a wild card into the $15,000 Honolulu Futures.

Qualifying for the tournament is this weekend at Ala Moana and Diamond Head. The main draw is Tuesday to Thursday at Ala Moana and Friday to Sunday (Nov. 19 to 21) at Diamond Head. Admission is free.

The U.S. Tennis Association will conduct a Line Umpire Clinic tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Pearl Harbor Naval Base.

The clinic is being conducted to train line umpires for next week's Pro Circuit event in Honolulu. The clinic is free and no experience is necessary.

Busy weekend for Warrior men's team

The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team will play UC Davis today on the Rainbows' newly renovated courts.

It is the first of eight home matches over the next two months for the Rainbows, who haven't had a home match in more than two years because of the condition of their facility.

This weekend, the Rainbows will try to qualify for the main draw of next week's USTA Honolulu Futures event.

Hawai'i's new 12-court facility will be the site of the 2005 WAC Men's and Women's Championships, April 21 to 23.


BOWLING

'Aiea boys, girls lead state tournament

The 'Aiea High School boys hold a four-pin advantage over second-place Hawai'i Baptist following the first day of the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association/Billy Tees Bowling State Championships yesterday at the Lihu'e Bowling Center on Kaua'i.

Na Ali'i has a much more comfortable lead — 147 pins over second-place Mililani — in the girls' compeition.

Roosevelt's Jarrett Mizo has the individual lead with 1,352 pins through six rounds. Maryknoll's Vaseem Anwar is second with 1,326 pins.

'Aiea's Noel Campos leads the girls' competition with 1,169 pins. Leilehua's Jennifer Boissell is second with 1,147.

Today's final three rounds start at 8 a.m.


GOLF

Cotner shoots another 75 in PGA qualifying

Hawai'i's Keoke Cotner shot his second straight 3-over 75 to remain tied for 38th place after two rounds of the PGA Tour Qualifying School's Second Stage event at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

Philip Price of Wales shot 70 and leads at 140. There are 11 players tied for 15th at 148.

The top 19 scorers after 72 holes will join qualifiers from five other second stage sites at the Q-School's Final stage Dec. 1 to 6 at PGA West Stadium Course & Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta, Calif.


SWIMMING & DIVING

UH's Huang earns weekly WAC honors

University of Hawai'i diver Qiong Jie Huang was named Western Athletic Conference swimming and diving Athlete of the Week.

Huang captured the one-meter and three-meter diving events at last week's USC Trojan Diving Invitational. The junior from Wen Zhou, China, also finished third in the platform event.


VOLLEYBALL

UH's Kamana'o an academic All-American

University of Hawai'i sophomore setter Kanoe Kamana'o earned a place on the Academic All-America All-District VIII second team for volleyball. Players were selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Kamana'o, the 2003 national freshman of the year, is an Iolani graduate. She has a 3.30 grade point average with a major in Communication.

The seven first-team selections advanced to the national ballot. Top-ranked Washington had three players on the first team, which also included Nevada's Christine Harms and Stanford Olympian Ogonna Nnamani.


Chaminade topples BYU-Hawai'i in three

Patti Hardimon had 16 kills and Valasi Sepulona added 15 as Chaminade swept Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 32-30, 30-23, 30-26, in a non-conference women's match last night at Cannon Activities Center.

Kahala Kabalis added 14 kills and nine digs for the Silverswords (16-6).

Noelle Filimoeatu had 11 kills and Lilly Tufuga added 10 for the Seasiders (12-13).


Warriors, Tigers in four-match exhibition

Tickets for the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball exhibition against the University of the Pacific Wednesday are on sale.

Wednesday's match is the first of four across the state. The two teams will play Thursday on the Big Island, next Friday on Moloka'i and Nov. 20 on Kaua'i.

Tickets for the Wednesday match at the Stan Sheriff Center are priced as follows: $5 adults, $3 senior citizens, $3 students, $3 UH students.


Lambert named MVP of Pro Beach volleyball

Punahou graduate Mike Lambert's spectacular season on the beach ended at the 2004 AVP Nissan Series Pro Beach Volleyball Awards, where he was named Most Valuable Player.

Lambert played indoors at the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and was 2002 AVP Rookie of the Year. He teamed with legend Karch Kiraly this year to finish at the top of the points standings. They won three times and took second twice and third twice.

Lambert won a fourth tournament at the season-ending Santa Barbara Invitational with Eric Fonoimoana. Kiraly sat out with a shoulder injury.

Lambert also was named Best Offensive Player for the second time in three years, and he and Kiraly were Team of the Year. Olympic gold medalists Misty May and Kerri Walsh were the women's Team of the Year, after winning seven tournaments. Walsh won MVP honors.


Vivas gains AVCA Hall of Fame

Punahou graduate Sandra Vivas will be inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2004 Hall of Fame Class, along with Teri Clemens, Debbie Green and Al Scates. The induction will take place Dec. 16 in Long Beach, during the final four.

Vivas was the first full-time executive director for the AVCA and served from 1983 to 2000, increasing membership from 200 to 3,200. She now serves as founder, chief executive officer and president of AthleticLink.com. It partners with the AVCA to power the association's on-line career resources center.
