Yim back in semis of Waikoloa Futures

Robert Yim advanced to the semifinals of the Hilton Waikoloa Village Futures for the second consecutive year yesterday when No. 8 seed Tres Davis was forced to withdraw in the third set with leg cramps.
Yim, of California, won the quarterfinal match, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 1-0, and will play No. 6 seed Horia Tecau in today's semifinals at the Kohala Tennis Club on the Big Island. Tecau defeated 18-year-old Scoville Jenkins, 6-2, 6-4.
In other quarterfinal matches, No. 4 seed Wayne Odesnik ousted Tim Smyczek, 6-4, 6-3, and Alex Kuznetsov beat 17-year-old Phillip Simmons, 6-2, 6-4.
Odesnik plays Kuznetsov in today's first semifinal at 9 a.m., followed by Yim playing Tecau.
The semifinals winners advance to tomorrow's final with the champion earning $1,950 and 18 series points.
Admission to all matches is free.
The 5th Annual Women's Night Doubles will be held Wednesday through Saturday at Kailua Racquet Club.
Over $2,500 in prize money is offered in this professional women's tennis event, which is free to the public.
Matches begin at 6 p.m. nightly.
Hawaii's Keoki Cotner fired a 3-under 69 and moved into a seven-way tie for seventh place after three rounds of the PGA Tour Qualifying School's Second Stage Tournament at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, Texas.
Cotner has a 54-hole total of 3-over 219 and is five shots behind leader D.J. Bigman of Albuquerque, N.M.
The top 19 finishers and ties after today's final round will join qualifiers from five other second stage sites at the Final Stage Qualifying Dec. 1 to 6 at PGA West Stadium Course & Jack Nicklaus Course in La Quinta, Calif.
Next week, Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin will play in a second stage tournament at Black Horse Course, in Seaside, Calif.
Nadica Karleusa tallied a match-high 14 kills as No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific swept host Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-21, 30-28, 30-26, in a Pacific West Conference match last night.
Barbara Martin added 12 kills for HPU (19-3, 9-1). Nanea Kamauoha tallied 11 kills for UH-Hilo (4-20, 1-9).
The Hawai'i Pacific University's national champion cheerleading squads will be hosting a canned food drive to benefit the Hawai'i Food Bank today, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Beretania and Vineyard Safeway parking lot.
