Odesnik, Tecau in Futures tennis final

Wayne Odesnik and Horia Tecau will square off in today's singles final of the Hilton Waikoloa Village Futures at the Kohala Tennis Club.

Odesnik, the No. 4 seed, defeated Alex Kuznetsov 7-6 (6), 6-2 in yesterday's semifinals. Tecau, the No. 6 seed from Romania, defeated Robert Yim 6-4, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

The final starts at 9 a.m. Admission is free. The champion wins $1,950 and 18 series points.

Following the singles final, Brendan Evans and Scott Oudsema will play Scoville Jenkins and Phillip Simmonds in the doubles final.



Cross country

UH finishes 17th at NCAA West Regional

The Hawai'i women's cross country team finished 17th at the NCAA West Regional yesterday at Fresno, Calif.

Sophomore Dana Buchanan led Hawai'i, finishing 45th with a personal best of 21:52 in the six-kilometer race that featured nearly 200 athletes from 35 teams.

Other Hawai'i runners were: Sabrina Reeve (22:23, 67th), Chantelle Laan (22:34, 78th), Kelly Young (23:34, 131st), Danielle Binns (24:05, 153rd) and Heather Scott (24:22, 163rd).

Stanford won the team title and its top runner Alicia Craig won the individual title with a time of 20:03.



SURFING

Vans Hawaiian Pro, Roxy Pro postponed

The Vans Hawaiian Pro men's surfing contest and Roxy Pro women's surfing contest were postponed yesterday due to insufficient wave conditions at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.

Both events are part of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.

BYUH defeats Fiji for Asia-Pacific title

Paul Peterson scored a game-high 23 points as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated the Fiji Invitational Team, 98-45, in the Third Annual Asia-Pacific Basketball Classic championship yesterday.

Peterson, a freshman point guard, hit five 3-pointers and made six steals. Sakiasi Rokodi led Fiji with 14 points.



WEIGHTLIFTING

Father-son tandem earns world titles

Hawai'i's Ed Morishima Jr. and his father Ed Morishima Sr. each won bench pressing titles at the World Association of Bench Pressers and Deadlifters World Championships yesterday in Reno, Nev.

The 198-pound Morishima Jr., 42, bench pressed 540 pounds to win the Masters (age 40-46 division).

Morishima Sr., who is 70 years old and 165 pounds, bench pressed 225 pounds to win the Masters (age 68-74 division).

Morishima Jr. said the competition featured more than 700 competitors.

"It feels great," the son said. "Especially doing it with your father. We were the only father and son team there."



VOLLEYBALL

HPU sweeps UH-Hilo for 20th victory

Flavia Brakling tallied a match-high 13 kills as No. 13 Hawai'i Pacific swept Hawai'i-Hilo for the second consecutive night 30-18, 30-21, 30-20 in a non-conference women's match at UHH Gym.

Christina Cooley recorded eight kills for UH-Hilo (4-21). Barbara Martin added 11 kills for HPU (20-3).
