Group honors top money raisers

The Association of Fundraising Professionals will recognize AFP Award winners and Jefferson Award winners at the National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, Friday at noon at the Sheraton Waikiki.

The 14th annual event is themed "Extraordinary Visions Make the Difference."

Plenary speaker Dewitt Jones will speak before the luncheon. Jones, a photographer and part-time resident of Moloka'i, is also an author and film director.

"Dewitt reminds us that there are many ways to look at the same subject," said Jane Heimer-

dinger, chairwoman of the state's Philanthropy Day program. "He really is a wonderful visionary."

The six AFP Award winners are:

• Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation, winner of the President's Award.

Over the past 110 years, the foundation has provided leadership money for building projects, children's programs, improvements in health facilities, environmental causes, emergency relief and educational needs.

• Susan E. K. Lampe, winner of the Outstanding Fundraising Professional Award.

Since 1996, Lampe has been the director of Gift Planning at the University of Hawai'i Foundation. Under her leadership, planned gifts have accounted for 24 percent of the $111.7 million raised for the first comprehensive campaign for the University of Hawai'i.

• Big Island Candies, winner of the Outstanding Small Business Award.

Big Island Candies' commitment to Hawai'i's youth includes sponsorship for pre-school through college educational, fund-raising and scholarship programs. The Big Island Candies Foundation awards annual college scholarships to Big Island junior golfers for academic achievement.

• Castle & Cooke Resorts LLC, winner of the Outstanding Corporation Award.

In addition to more than 200 grants totaling $667,275 to the Lanai Community Benefit Fund, Castle & Cooke Resorts gives directly to many organizations including the Coalition for Drug Free Lanai and the Lanai Art Center.

• Susan Graham, winner of the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award.

Graham has been a member of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Board since 1997 and is a member of the Seabury Hall board of trustees since 1998. She has been involved in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Capital and Endowment Campaign, and as a trustee at Seabury she has served in many leadership positions. She and her husband, Michael, are longtime supporters.

• Nancy Bannick, winner of the Outstanding Philanthropist Award.

Bannick has been a generous donor to Hawai'i Public Radio since its inception in 1981 and has served on the board for many years. She also serves on the Honolulu Symphony board, is vice president of the Friends of the Natatorium and vice president for Chamber Music Hawai'i. She is a charter member of the Historic Hawai'i Foundation, a member of the Governor's Diamond Head Advisory Council and a supporter of the Kapi'olani Park Preservation Society.
