Rainbow volleyball remains at No. 2 in poll

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team retained its No. 2 ranking in the the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll released yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (23-0) received 1,530 points and two first-place votes.

Washington (22-0) remained in the top spot with 1,622 points and 62 first-place votes.

The Rainbows are the top seed for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, Friday through Sunday in Reno, Nev.

Hawai'i will play SMU in Friday's quarterfinals at 10 a.m., Hawai'i time. The match will be televised live on OC-16.

HPU, Chaminade in Division II regional

The Hawai'i Pacific and Chaminade women's volleyball teams have qualified for this week's eight-team NCAA Division II Pacific Region Tournament at La Jolla, Calif.

HPU (20-3), the Pacific West Conference champion, is seeded fifth in the single-elimination tournament. Chaminade (16-6), the PacWest runner up, is seeded sixth.

UC-San Diego (25-1) is the No. 1 seed and will host the tournament that begins Thursday and runs through Saturday.

Thursday's opening schedule: UC-San Diego vs. Cal State-Bakersfield; Hawai'i Pacific vs. Central Washington; Cal State-Los Angeles vs. Chaminade; Cal Poly Pomona vs. Cal State-San Bernardino.



SAILING

UH coed team wins North-South Regatta

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team won the 17-team North-South Regatta over the weekend at Bakersfield, Calif.

The Rainbows, ranked No. 17, finished with a low-best score of 101. Stanford was second with 104 point and USC third with 106.

In A division, UH's Matthew Stine and Cassandra Harris finished fifth with 30 points.

The best performances of the regatta were turned in by UH's Scott DeCurtis and Becky Mabardy, who finished with 11 points in B division. The duo won five of seven races.



BODYBUILDING

Mercado, Nee best of Paradise Cup

Brian Mercado and Robin Nee were the overall winners of the Paradise Cup Bodybuilding Championships at Sheraton Waikiki Hotel on Friday.

Mercado competed in the open men middleweight division, while Nee was in the women's heavyweight division.

Brian Copeland (light heavyweight) and Nee were named best posers.

Norman Keliiwaiwaiole (heavyweight) was the overall winner of the novice men's division and Baltazar Calzantes (light heavyweight) was the overall masters men winner.



BASKETBALL

Chaminade prevails in opener, 67-64

Zack Whiting scored 18 points, including 10 of 18 free throws, as Chaminade beat Winona State (Minn.), 67-64, last night at McCabe Gym in the season opener for both teams.

Chris Nelson added 14 points and Chris Reeves added 10 for the Silverswords, who were down 40-32 at halftime.

David Zellman scored 12 to lead Winona State.
