Man sought in Maunakea attackPolice today were looking for a 42-year-old man who they believe stabbed a 32-year-old man on Maunakea Street in downtown Honolulu about 7:30 last night.
The two men had quarreled earlier in the day and the younger man was stabbed as he walked out of a store fronting 1159 Maunakea Street, police said.
They said the stabbing victim, who remained in critical condition this morning at The Queen's Medical Center, knows the name of the man who attacked him.
Police classified the case as an attempted second-degree murder.
Van catches fire; H-1 lanes closed
The eastbound lanes of the H-1 Freeway were closed for about an hour this morning, beginning about 5:10 a.m., after a van caught fire following a traffic collision near the Punahou Street overpass.
Firefighters said they were told the van, containing seven people, was heading west when the driver lost control causing the van to climb over the medial barrier into the eastbound lanes.
The van caught fire but all of the occupants were able to get out of it. Firefighters at the scene were able to account for only four of the people who were in the van when the mishap occurred. They believe the other three walked away before emergency workers arrived.
Man arrested for unlawful entry
A 20 year-old man was arrested in the Pearl Highlands shopping complex parking structure about 10:20 p.m. yesterday after a 24-year-old man returned from shopping and saw the man search through the trunk of his car.
The car owner was coming down the escalator when he saw two men near his car, one going through the trunk and the other acting as a lookout, police said.
The owner began running toward his car and yelled at the two men, who jumped into a blue Toyota and drove off. The owner of the car was able to get the Toyota's license number and called police, who stopped the car and arrested the driver on suspicion of unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and also promotion of dangerous drugs after finding a packet of crystal methamphetamine in the car.
Charges pending in assault case
Kidnapping, car-theft and assault charges are pending against a 31-year-old homeless man following an incident on Monday with his 27-year-old girlfriend.
The woman told police the man beat her and tried to throw her into a canal in the Moanalua area about 9:40 p.m. Monday but that she was able to break away and call 911. The boyfriend drove away in the woman's car before police arrived, but they arrested him yesterday in a park where he was known to stay. The woman's car was still missing as of this morning.
Helicopter pilot helps nab thieves
The Honolulu Police Department's helicopter was used yesterday to thwart two would-be car thieves.
The helicopter pilot reported finding a gold BMW and silver Dodge about 11:20 a.m. in a pineapple field off Kaukonahua Road near Waialua and was able to get the cars' license plate numbers.
The pilot checked with police dispatchers who told him both cars had been reported stolen. Patrol cars responded and two men, ages 33 and 20, were arrested on suspicion of car theft.
