Theater group will honor Shari Lynn

MARQUEE MATTERS: Manoa Valley Theatre's annual fund-raiser gala, in which a community personality is applauded for show-biz contributions, has a new name, "Manoa Marquee," beginning with the 2005 show, set for April 30 at the Dole Cannery Ballroom. The honoree will be Shari Lynn, the veteran singer, actress and educator. ...

Speaking of marquees, everyone who's seen it lit and glowing offers raves about the Hawai'i Theatre's nifty neon number. And look for one of Broadway's big names to be flashing on the sign in the months ahead. Burton White, theater manager, has been huddling with presenters Jeff Malloy and Dean Shibuya of San Francisco about booking a two-nighter for the yet-to-be-announced star. ...

Malloy and Shibuya were brunching Sunday with Hawai'i Opera Theatre general and artistic director Henry Akina at The Veranda of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel about a HOT link with the aforementioned Broadway legend. ...

Sunday brunch at the Moana must've been the place to be for the arts-and-culture crowd. Carolyn Berry hosted a Honolulu Symphony table that included maestro Samuel Wong, executive director Stephen Bloom, guest narrator George Takei and singer Jimmy Borges. Bumped into Takei as we both were fetching desserts: "You people in Hawai'i have to really make choices," he said about the three sweet items on his plate (mine had five, gulp!). ...

ITEMIZATIONS: Jasmine Trias, the No. 3 finisher in this year's "American Idol," marked her 18th birthday with a lawn party at the Waikiki Aquarium a few nights back. Parents Rudy and Nora Trias looked on happily as the birthday girl serenaded family and friends with three songs. ...

His new film might be dubbed "Pauly Shore Is Dead," but the comedian-director was very much alive and well at Kimo's in Lahaina, enjoying dinner with friends. On another occasion, surfing legend Joey Cabell grabbed a bite at the Maui restaurant, too. ...

Brooke Burns, a star on Fox-TV's "North Shore," turned heads when she dined at Morton's at Ala Moana Center recently. Also enjoying Morton's steak and salmon: Hinano Yoshikawa, in town for Ala Moana Center's World Festival. ...

Alan and Suzanne Arkin (he's the veteran actor) dined with David and Loren Farmer (he's the actor-lawyer) at Ruth's Chris Steak House the other night. Farmer opened last night in Manoa Valley Theatre's "Red Herring," and he just wound up a two-day improvisation workshop conducted by Arkin, in which local actors such as Victoria Gail-White (also in "Red Herring"), Becky Maltby, Jan McGrath, Mark Stitham and others also participated. ...

Exits: Investigative reporter Jacqueline McLean will leave KGMB-9 after tomorrow for Minneapolis. Walter Makaula left the CBS affiliate's news team recently to join KFVE-5; and Britt Riedl, KGMB's weekend meteorologist, has not returned from maternity leave. ...

It was reunion time when the Paul Taylor Dance Company did its sold-out Hawai'i Theatre concert, under auspices of Ballet Hawaii. Wally Chappell, now the executive director of the company, sat with former colleague Jane Campbell, who last year retired at Honolulu Theatre for Youth, where Chappell previously was artistic director. The audience included Ballet Hawaii president Susan Schull, Hawaii Ballet Theatre director Charlys Ing and daughter Kristl (a Yale graduate), former Broadway dancer Steve Harmon and photog extraordinaire Kim Taylor Reece. ...

DATES TO CIRCLE: eightOeight will launch a new dance party from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Dec. 11 at the Waikiki Outrigger's main showroom. The seven-member band will play hits of the '70s to the '90s, with lead vocals shared by Ginai, N.J. Gottschalk and Malcolm Rolsal; other band members are Carl Fidel (bass), Jon Basebase (guitars, vocals), Scott Schafer (drums, musical director) and Tony Revias (keyboards, vocals). VIP tickets are $25 (includes pupu and one drink), regular admission is $10 (with a one-drink minimum).

Kailua High marks its 50th anniversary with a Christmas concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 27 in the school gym. Shigeru Hotoke directs the Kailua High Alumni Choir and Madrigal Singers; former singers are sought. Show up at 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at rehearsals at Kailua Methodist Church. Tickets are $5, on sale at several Kailua merchants. ...
