McLachlin tied for 19th in qualifier

Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin shot a 1-under 71 yesterday and was tied with 20 other golfers for 19th place after the first round of a PGA Qualifying School Second Stage Tournament at the Black Horse Course in Seaside, Calif..

Mark Wilson and Bill Haas, son of PGA Tour veteran Jay Haas, shot 67s to share the lead in the 72-hole event.

Five players were one stroke behind with another five players at 69.

McLachlin is a Punahou School and UCLA alum.

The top 20 finishers after Saturday's final round will join qualifiers from five other second stage sites at the Final Stage Qualifying Dec. 1 to 6 at PGA West Stadium Course & Jack Nicklaus Course in La Quinta, Calif.

At a second stage tourney at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., former Hawai'i resident and PGA Tour veteran Scott Simpson shot a 2-under 70 and was in a 12-way tie for 22nd place.

Simon Yates, Scott Petersen and Jens B. Nilsson share the lead with 66s.

Kamehameha Schools alum Keoki Cotner advanced to the Final Stage after qualifying last week at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, Texas.

Cotner, who now lives in Bedford, Texas, finished tied for 14th as the top 19 golfers advanced.
