No. 2 Wahine sweep SMU

Advertiser Staff

Victoria Prince had 13 kills as the No. 2-ranked University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team breezed past Southern Methodist today in the opening match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Reno, Nev.

The Rainbow Wahine defeated SMU, 30-15, 30-27, 30-20, and advanced to the semifinal.

The match will be rebroadcast 7 tonight on Oceanic Cable 16.

UH will play the winner of the Boise State-Fresno State match in Saturday's semifinals at 3 p.m. Should it win, it will play in the championship 1 p.m. Sunday. All matches will be televised live on OC-16.

With the loss of previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Washington Thursday, UH (24-0) is the only remaining unbeaten team in Division I volleyball.

Prince had a hitting percentage of over .800 and UH coach Dave Shoji called it an "unbelievable performance. She had pretty much free reign and took advantage of it."

The Rainbow Wahine cruised in the first game, held off the Mustangs in the second game and rallied to win the third.

UH trailed 9-11 and 14-15 in the third game before pulling away behind Teisa Fotu's kill shots. UH went on a 13-2 run for a 27-17 lead and cruised to victory.

The match started at noon in Reno, 10 a.m. Hawai'i time, and Shoji admitted his team wasn't ready despite the results.

Shoji said "we weren't sharp ... we blocked OK and we dug OK."

UH hit .327 for the game with 53 kills. SMU hit .045.
