NORTH SHORE

Gunman fires shots into ground

A 43-year-old man was arrested last night after someone fired two shots into the ground next to the Waialua District Park gymnasium.

A city parks worker heard gunshots about 7:45 p.m. and called police who found a man at a nearby gas station who matched the description of the alleged gunman. Police searched the man and found a .22-caliber, Beretta semi-automatic pistol and a box of ammunition.

The man, who police said was intoxicated, was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangering, not properly storing a firearm and possession of an unregistered handgun. He was also arrested on a contempt of court warrant.

No one was injured in the incident.

HONOLULU

Man arrested in forgery case

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of forgery yesterday after allegedly trying to cash a $1,500 check at a Waikiki bank yesterday.

Police said the man went to the bank about 12:15 p.m. and handed over the check to a teller who thought it looked odd and contacted a supervisor.

The supervisor determined that the account had been closed and contacted the account holder, who denied writing any checks to the man who was attempting to cash it.

Police were called to the bank and the man was arrested.

Man reports home intrusion

Police have opened a case on behalf of a 79-year-old Kaimuki man who said he awoke from a nap about 3 p.m. yesterday and found an intruder in his home.

The man told police the stranger tied him up, blindfolded and gagged him before sifting through the man's house. It was later determined that cash and jewelry had been taken from the home.

Police classified the case as a first-degree robbery and kidnapping. They had no suspects as of this morning.

Pair tried to cash fake check

A man and a woman were arrested at First Hawaiian Bank's Kapahulu branch yesterday after allegedly trying to cash a bogus $1,200 check.

Police said the man, 30, endorsed the check and made it payable to the woman, 21, because she had an account at the bank.

While the teller encouraged the man to open an account of his own, other bank workers attempted to verify the check's authenticity but determined it had been stolen and then forged, police said.

When officers arrived, the woman admitted to writing the check and she and the man were arrested on suspicion of forgery.

Police said the girl confronted the other girl at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Rose Street in Wahiawa. Police said she got a cigarette lighter and lit the girl's hair.

The victim was not seriously injured and she reported the incident to police. The other girl was identified and arrested yesterday on one count of first-degree reckless endangering. She was released pending further investigation.
