Family-friendly 'Oranges' show

Enjoy the great outdoors at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Department of Theatre and Dance's family production, "The Love for Three Oranges." Prince Tartaglia tries to find his smile by going on a journey to get three magical oranges from the evil fairy Creonta. Masked characters and puppets of all sizes bring the adventure to life. The show is recommended for those 8 and older.

A good look at the 'ukulele

The 'Ukulele Guild of Hawaii presents the 3rd annual 'Ukulele Exhibition and Conference this weekend. The public is invited to browse the 'ukulele exhibition, vendor displays and silent auction Saturday and Sunday in the Oahu Room. The conference also includes seminars and workshops for a fee (call 440-4646).

Full day of fun at harbor

The 5th annual Honolulu Harbor Festival features a full day of displays, food, entertainment and fun right on the water's edge. Honoring Hawai'i's long and colorful maritime history, the event offers interactive booths with arts and crafts and games from Bishop Museum, NOAA Ocean Services, Hawaii Longline Association, Matson, Horizon Lines, the Coast Guard, the USS Missouri, Aloha Boat Days and the Dolphin Institute. Keiki can take part in educational activities such as glue and sand art, making a honu visor and Hawaiian fishing cordage-net making. Entertainment includes the Ryusei taiko drums, strolling entertainers, Kailua Jazz Hounds and a Boston Tea Party re-enactment on the Falls of Clyde.

Pasko! expands to McCoy Pavilion

Estrella Seese surveys the parol (Christmas star lanterns) at an earlier Pasko! This year the celebration is even bigger and better — and in a new location.
Pasko! is back in a big way. The 16th year of this Filipino holiday celebration features longer hours, more to see and do plus a new location. New this year is an outdoor cafÚ with violins. Returning will be lots of an old favorite: decorative handmade Christmas lanterns, or parol. Also on hand will be Filipino food, arts and crafts, books, the Ati-Atihan festival dancers, martial-arts demonstrations, storytelling, keiki games, photo booth and cooking demonstrations. Entertainment includes folk dances by the Larawan Youth Ensemble, the University of Hawai'i Katipunan Club and BIBAK; choral songs by the Silangan Singers and the Filipino Women's League; and guitar music around the pavilion. Hawai'i resident and former Philippines movie star Dante Ponce emcees.

Hapa in concert tonight

The next Aloha Friday Hawaiian concert features the Na Hoku Hanohano award winning harmonies of Hapa, above. Composed of Nathan Aweau and Barry Flanagan, the duo offers sweet instrumentals and contemporary Hawaiian music. Also performing will be Ka Leo O Laka I Ka Hikina O Ka La, under the direction of kumu hula Kaleo Trinidad. Park at the Civic Center parking garage. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Long Beach Shortbus in two concerts

Sublime fans can rejoice and hear old favorites brought back in a new way when Long Beach Shortbus drives into town. Former Sublime member Eric Wilson, along with RAS-1, Trey Pangborn and Damion Ramirez, comprise the band, which is touring nationwide to promote its debut full-length album, "Flying Ship of Fantasy." Local alt-rocker band Linus opens. Doors open at 7 p.m.

'Chinese Coffee' at Readers Theatre

The Army Community Theatre continues its Sundays @ 2 Matinee Readers Theatre program this weekend with "Chinese Coffee." Written by Ira Lewis and adapted by Vanita Rae Smith, the drama examines two middle-aged best friends as sparks fly in their lively relationship. Richard McPherson appears as Harry Levine and Richard Pellett is Jacob Manheim. Smith also directs.

All that jazz at La Pietra

Hear great music while relaxing in the shadow of Diamond Head during Sunset Jazz, Etc. Local jazz masters Jimmy Borges, left, and Shari Lynn, center, will roll out classic sounds from the '30s and '40s. Also appearing will be Gabe Baltazar, right, Martin Denny, Wade Cambern and The Savoy Sisters — Rose Marie Barbee, Annie MacLachlan and Shari Lynn. Valet parking will be available, with the overflow lot at Kapi'olani Community College. Free shuttle service will be provided. Grounds open at 5 p.m., and proceeds benefit the school.

A few Visionaries in town

Members of Los Angeles-based underground hip-hop collective The Visionaries will perform at Trip The Lights at Studio 1. In town to throw down the politically- and socially-conscious Visionaries-style flow are members Writers Block, LMNO and Key Kool. Also on the performance list are DJ Westafa, EMIRC, Nomasterbacks, AudibleLabRats, Creed Chameleon, High Chief XL, the Waikiki B-boyz and DJs Skid, Oliver Twist and Kavet the Catalyst. The event will also be Trip The Lights' last at Studio 1, which closes its doors for good after tonight. 18 and older only.

For babies, kids, parents

Oh, baby, the New Baby and Kids Expo is back just in time for the holidays. More than 150 vendors will be on hand with info, including booths on youth sports, keiki activities and treats for mom. Demonstrations include one on feng shui (10:30 a.m. Sunday) and also how to wear a baby sling in more than seven ways (2:30 p.m. both days). A panel of working moms will share their experiences of balancing a job and home life (10:30 a.m. Saturday). Renowned child play expert Stevanne Auerbach, also known as "Dr. Toy," talks about "Smart Toys and Smart Play." (2 p.m. each day). Kids will enjoy seeing their favorites Scooby Doo, the Cat in the Hat, Hello Kitty and Madeline wandering around. Keiki ages 3-7 can attend the Kids' bash (1 p.m. Sunday). And contests abound, such as the Baby Crawling Contest (1 p.m. Saturday), Meadow Gold Dairies Milk and Donut Eating Contest (11 a.m. and 3 p.m. both days), and Dance Dance Revolution contest held throughout the expo.
