DUI checkpoints up for holidays

Honolulu police will be setting up checkpoints beginning next week and continuing through the Christmas and New Year's holidays in an effort to deter alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.

The checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations from Nov. 24 through Jan. 3.

As of Nov. 15, 55 people have been killed on O'ahu in 50 traffic collisions, of which 21 were alcohol or drug related, police said.

During the same period last year, there were 72 traffic fatalities as a result of 61 collisions, police said.



WCC students cooking turkeys

Windward Community College and its Culinary Arts students will cook Thanksgiving turkey dinners that are fresh, hot and ready to go.

The meal includes a roasted or deep-fried turkey (12-14 pounds), Portuguese sausage stuffing, home-style gravy, dinner rolls, corn cobbettes, marshmallow candied yams, fresh cranberry relish and a 9-inch pumpkin pie for $75.

The meals are staggered so each one is fresh and hot beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Rotary sponsors fishpond work

The Rotary Club of Kane'ohe will sponsor an open community work day at the Waikalua Loko Fishpond from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the end of Kulauli Street.

The event, open to the public, is part of the Rotary Gives Thanks Day where members give back to their communities in creative and helpful ways.

The revitalization of the Waikalua Loko Fishpond has become a very important component of the Kane'ohe community in educating school children and their families about good stewardship, Hawaiian culture and the role it plays in lifelong learning, said Herb Lee, with the Waikalua Loko Fishpond Preservation Society.

The workday includes education tours that begin at 8 a.m. For more information call Lee at 262-3261.



Girl set another's hair on fire

A 12-year-old girl was arrested yesterday after police said she set another girl's hair on fire.

Police said the girl confronted the other girl at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Rose Street in Wahiawa. Police said she got a cigarette lighter and lit the girl's hair.

The victim was not seriously injured and she reported the incident to police. The other girl was identified and arrested yesterday on one count of first-degree reckless endangering. She was released pending further investigation.



Bone marrow drive tomorrow

"Thanks for Giving" is the theme of a bone marrow donor drive from 2 to 6 p.m. tomorrow with live entertainment at the Bose Entertainment Center at the Ward Entertainment Center.

Entertainers include Ledward Kaapana, John Cruz, Imua, and Colleen K. with disc jockey Bart DaSilva as emcee.

The Hawai'i Bone Marrow Donor Registry will test, register and take a small blood sample for those who are 18 to 60, healthy and willing to be a donor. Call 547-6154 for more information.



Straub cancer forum at Ilikai

"Cancer Care: The Need-to-know Issues" is the topic of a free public meeting tomorrow morning at the Renaissance Ilikai Waikiki Hotel.

The event was designed to provide the latest on cure and treatment of the disease by a panel pulled together by Straub Clinic & Hospital. Sponsors say about 1,700 Hawai'i residents die of cancer each year. Straub has asked experts to address issues of diagnostic studies, therapies and guidelines.

The panel runs form 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Straub asks that those planning to attend register in advance at 524-6755, but walk-in registration will take place from 7:30 a.m. tomorrow.



Food drive at Hilo Safeway

HILO, Hawai'i — The nonprofit Christmas Wish Program will mark National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week today and tomorrow with a food drive outside of Safeway at the Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo.

The food collected will be used for a Dec. 20 Christmas dinner for homeless families that is expected to draw about 300 people.

Extra food will be used to restock the shelves of the Hawai'i Island Food Bank.
