Chaminade, Hawai'i Pacific win opening NCAA matches

Chaminade University and Hawai'i Pacific University both won their opening matches yesterday at the NCAA Women's Division II Pacific Regional volleyball tournament at La Jolla, Calif.

Chaminade University upset No. 3 Cal State Los Angeles, 30-15, 30-21, 30-17, for the Silverswords' first-ever postseason volleyball victory.

Sophomore setter Nikolina Rastovac led Chaminade with 39 assists, and libero Kalae Araujo had 12 digs.

Kahala Kabalis led the Silverswords (who hit .458) with 16 kills, while Patti Hardimon added 11 and Valasi Sepulona 10.

Chaminade improves to 17-6, and will face Cal State San Bernardino today at 3 p.m., Hawai'i time, in one semifinal.

Hawai'i Pacific (21-3) dealt Central Washington University (26-1) its first loss of the season behind 22 kills from middle blocker Barbara Martin.

Martin also had 14 digs and six blocks in the Sea Warriors' 30-28, 30-28, 29-31, 32-30.

Flavia Brakling had 19 kills and 14 digs for the Sea Warriors, who will face UC San Diego today in the other semifinal.



Tennis

No. 2 seed knocks out UCLA's Lam in Futures

Kaimuki's Chris Lam, a UCLA senior ranked in the top 50 in the NCAA, was knocked out of the Honolulu Futures tennis tournament yesterday at Ala Moana courts.

Zack Fleishman, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, beat Lam, a wildcard, 6-1, 6-3.

Vladimir Pavicevic, the top seed, also advanced yesterday, beating Rubin Statham, 6-2, 6-1.

Action continues today at the Diamond Head courts at 9 a.m.



Top two seeds in semis at Kailua doubles

The top two seeded teams advanced to the semifinals of the Kailua Women's Night Doubles event at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Jing Jing Liu and Amy Sun, the No. 1 seeds, beat Davilyn Godinet and Shakti Stream, 6-1, 6-0 last night. Sun and Liu will face Dragica Jokisimovic and Tina Klep in one semifinal tonight.

Tetyana Bula and Adrienne Hegedus, the No. 2 seeds, beat Van Akagi-Bustin and Heidi Kaloi, 6-4, 6-0 last night. Bula and Hegedus will face Shana Peete and Mimi Kennell tonight in the other semifinal.

Matches are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.



Baseball

Bonds jersey highlights silent auction

An official Barry Bonds baseball jersey will be the featured item at the Hawai'i Winter Baseball Camp's silent auction tomorrow and Sunday at Les Murakami Stadium.

HWB president Hervy Kurisu said that according to longtime Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy, Bonds did not want to sign the jersey yet, but has said he will do so for the winning bidder.

Other Giants and Major League Baseball memorabilia will be up for bid at the silent auction, which will be on the stadium concourse both days of the camp from 9:30 a.m. to about 3:30 p.m. The auction is free and open to the public.



Water polo

Redlands knocks off BYUH at tournament

Tony Roma scored four goals to lead Redlands (7-6) over BYU-Hawai'i 7-6 in the first round of the Western Water Polo Association Tournament yesterday at Davis, Calif.

Vanja Kalabic and Vlada Stankovic each had two goals for BYUH (13-4).



Basketball

Maui Invitational 2006 field announced

DePaul, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Memphis, Oklahoma, Purdue and UCLA will join host Chaminade in the EA Sports Maui Invitational in 2006, it was announced yesterday.

Earlier, tournament officials announced DePaul's addition to the 2005 "field of dreams" which features six former national champions including Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Maryland and Michigan State.

This year's tournament will be Monday through Wednesday at the Lahaina Civic Center. For more information, call (808) 667-3865. The field includes BYU, Iowa, Louisville, North Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas and Chaminade.
