Penn defeats Gracie in unanimous decision

Advertiser Staff

Hilo's BJ Penn defeated Brazil's Rodrigo Gracie by unanimous decision in the main event of the Rumble on the Rock 6 mixed martial arts event last night.

A capacity crowd of more than 8,000 at the Blaisdell Center Arena watched Penn improve to 9-1-1, solidifying his reputation as the "best pound for pound" mixed martial arts fighter in the world.

Gracie dropped to 5-1. Gracie is the most famous name in jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts, and last night's event was hyped as the biggest card ever staged in Hawai'i.

Penn dominated all three five-minute rounds of the bout. He never landed any crushing punches or kicks, but Gracie constantly backed away during the bout.

Penn moved up to Gracie's weight class of 185 pounds for the bout. Penn normally fights at 160 or 170.
