BYUH's Smith runs to national title

Brigham Young University-Hawai'i's Chelsea Smith won her second straight NCAA II women's cross country title yesterday, finishing the 6-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 33 seconds at Evansville, Ind.

Smith, a junior from Mead, Wash., beat Allison Kreutzer of Clayton State by three seconds.

Smith was named the NCAA II National Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year.



TENNIS

The Futures is set

Wayne Odesnik defeated Alex Kuznetsov, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and Brendan Evans beat Fritz Wolmarans, 6-2, 6-2, yesterday to advance to the final of the Ho-nolulu Futures Tournament.

The final will be played at the Diamond Head courts today at 10 a.m.

Doubles rained out

The title match of the Kailua Women's Night Doubles was rained out last night. It will be played tomorrow at 7:15 p.m.



VOLLEYBALL

UH beats Pacific

Jose Delgado had 27 kills as the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team beat Pacific, 29-31, 33-31, 27-30, 30-18, 15-12, Friday night at the Moloka'i High gym.



GOLF

Parker's out, Scott's in

Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin finished in 60th place with a 72-hole total of 295 and failed to make it out of a PGA Qualifying School Second Stage Tournament at Seaside, Calif.

At a second-stage event in Beaumont, Calif., former Hawai'i resident Scott Simpson finished in a tie for 17th to advance to the final qualifying stage.

Campbell plays Kaua'i Friday at Moanalua and Iolani meets Hawai'i Prep Saturday at Kamehameha in the Division II state football tournament semifinals. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.

WATER POLO

BYUH men finish fifth

Vanja Kalabic scored two goals as 14th-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i beat No. 17 Whittier, 11-9, yesterday to finish fifth in the Western Water Polo Association Championships at Davis, Calif.

Kalabic was named to the WWPA first team.
