Young musicians to perform Dec. 15

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's up-and-coming classical musicians will bask in the limelight when "From the Top," the Public Radio International program hosted by Christopher O'Riley, tapes a national broadcast at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Hawai'i Theatre.

The radio program airs from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturdays on 250 stations, including Hawai'i Public Radio's KHPR (89.1 FM), KKUA (90.7 FM) and KANO (91.1 FM).

The Island performers include:

• James Perlman, 13, a bassoonist from Pa'ia, performing Vivaldi.

• Melody Lindsay, 13, a harpist and eighth-grader at Iolani, performing Handel.

• The Enchantée Trio, Laura Keller, 16, a violinist and junior at Punahou; Dayna Furusawa, 17, a cellist and a senior at Education Lab School; and Tiffany Hyun, 16, a pianist and a junior at Punahou. They'll perform Mendelssohn.

Two other musicians will perform, although their selections have not been confirmed: Yohsuke Miyamoto, 18, a pianist and senior at Punahou, and Daniel Carvalho, 14, a slack-key guitarist and an eighth-grader at Assets School.

"The number of high caliber auditions from students in Hawai'i surpassed any other community that's presented the program locally," said Tom Vignieri, "From the Top" producer. "It's just too bad we only have room on this show for five performances."

Tickets: $45, $35, $25 and $15, on sale at the Hawai'i Theatre box office. Discounts are available for Hawai'i Public Radio and Hawai'i Theatre Center members.

Reservations: 528-0506.

Correction: Harpist Melody Lindsay attends Iolani. Her school was listed incorrectly in a previous version of this story.
