Traffic fatality identified

A man killed Friday in a motorcycle accident in 'Ewa Beach was identified by the medical examiners' office yesterday as John Yuen, 33, of 'Aiea.

Yuen was fatally injured when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a car on Fort Weaver Road. Two passengers in the car, boys ages 16 and 17, were hospitalized. The 19-year-old man who was driving the car was not injured, police said.

The accident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Friday on Fort Weaver Road near Parish Drive.

Witnesses said the motorcycle was speeding when it slammed into a car that was making a turn.



Two arrested in pineapple theft

Two men were arrested early yesterday following the theft of more than 500 pineapples from a Del Monte field in Wahiawa, police said.

A 41-year-old man and a 45-year-old man were arrested for investigation of second-degree theft, and a third man ran away, police said.

A Del Monte security guard spotted three men loading two pickup trucks with pineapples about 1:30 a.m., police said. As the trucks exited the field and turned onto Kunia Road, the guard called 911.

Patrol officers found three men in their vehicles hiding in a brush area off Wilikina Drive near the old Datsun dealership property. Police recovered more than 500 pineapples and returned them to Del Monte.

Police said the suspects are believed to have committed similar thefts at the property during the past year.



HECO to survey power lines

Hawaiian Electric Co. will conduct helicopter surveys of power line transmission right-of-ways around the island this week.

Weather permitting, a helicopter using "LiDAR" (Light Detection and Ranging) technology will collect data, images and video footage along each transmission right-of-way today through Friday.

The specially equipped helicopter has antennae extending from its sides and will fly low, often about 300 feet from the ground.

Flights will take place between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day.

Waipahu, Pearl City, Aiea, Honolulu International Airport and downtown Honolulu will be among the areas surveyed.



Two men sought in carjacking

Police yesterday were looking for two men who allegedly stole a 37-year-old Honolulu man's car early Saturday.

Police said the driver was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of Bethel and Beretania streets when a man entered on the passenger side and pulled out a pistol. The man told the driver to take him to Kukui Street, where they picked up another man.

The driver was forced at gunpoint to drive to Nu'uanu, Kalihi and Makiki, police said. At 4 a.m. the driver was told to get out of his vehicle near Roosevelt High School and the two men drove off with it, police said.

The man walked home and called the police.



UH Foundation names trustees

Retired First Hawaiian Bank Vice Chairman Howard Karr has been named chairman of the board of trustees of the University of Hawai'i Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the University of Hawai'i.

Appointments for the foundation's board were announced Friday.

Faye Kurren, president of Hawaii Dental Services, and developer Bert Kobayashi were named vice chairs.

Other trustees appointed by the foundation included Bank of Hawaii Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Allan Landon as treasurer and Bojim Investments Chairman James C. Wo as secretary.

The foundation is in the early stages of its Centennial Campaign, which aims to raise up to $250 million by 2007, the 100th anniversary of higher education in Hawai'i.



Help sought finding man

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Police are looking for a 43-year-old Hanapepe man who has been missing since he left in October for a camping trip in Kalalau Valley.

Station offers to tape greetings

KAHULUI, Maui — Videotape a brief holiday greeting for viewing on Akaku: Maui Community Television when the nonprofit agency opens its studio to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 10.

Akaku staff will assist with the tapings, which will be shown throughout the holidays on Calabash TV, Channel 52. Production facility tours and light refreshments also will be available.

Cruises to mark return of whales

MA'ALAEA, Maui — The Pacific Whale Foundation is celebrating the return of Hawai'i's humpback whale season with two "welcome home" cruises Saturday from Ma'alaea and Lahaina harbors. The cruises featuring whale experts will run from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost is $19.95 for adults and $15 for children ages 7 to 12. Younger children are free. For reservations, call (808) 249-8811.

Starting Dec. 1, the foundation will open its free whale information station at the McGregor Point Lookout. The station is staffed by naturalists who will provide updated information on whale activity. There also are displays and free guide books.

The station will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
