The University of Hawai'i baseball team picked up 13 recruits for the 2006 season during the early signing period that ended last week.
StudentSportsBaseball.com ranked the Rainbows' recruiting class 23rd in its top 25. The Web site added that the rankings can change depending on who is drafted and signed in the June draft. Only Nevada (16th) was ranked higher than UH among Western Athletic Conference schools.
Among the 13 recruits are two Hawai'i high school seniors in Mid-Pacific Institute right-handed pitcher Jayson Kramer and Roosevelt catcher Kevin Fujii. Kramer will become the eighth Owl to join UH coach Mike Trapasso's program.
Kramer told The Advertiser in July he was going to sign with UH.
Joining them are five other high school seniors, all from California, and six from junior colleges. Two of the California recruits are ranked in The Scouting Report's top 400 high school prospects nationally.
Catcher Landon Hernandez (Desert Chapel) of Indio, Calif., is ranked 161st and right-handed pitcher Matthew Daly (Esperanza) of Yorba Linda, Calif., is ranked 302nd. Hernandez was a member of USA Baseball's Junior National Team.
The other prep players are: Right-handed pitcher/outfielder Cody Allen of Elk Grove (Calif.) High; outfielder Matt Roquemore (West Torrance) of Torrance, Calif., and infielder Ryan Selden (Canyon Springs) of Moreno Valley, Calif. Selden is from the same high school of UH incoming freshman shortstop Joe Spiers.
The JC transfers are: Right-handed pitcher Daniel Caldwell (Glendale JC), of Glendale, Calif.; right-handed pitcher Tyler Davis (Santa Barbara JC), of Isla Vista, Calif.; infielder Jorge Franco (Los Angeles Harbor JC) of Gardena, Calif.; infielder Justin Frash of Oxnard (Calif.) JC; left-handed pitcher Ian Harrington (Bellevue JC) of Renton, Wash.; and left-handed pitcher Jeff Soskin (Chabot JC) of Alameda, Calif.
Frash, according to the Ventura (Calif.) County Star, was also recruited by UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and Fresno State. His father, Roger Frash, was picked in the first round by the New York Mets in the January phase of the 1980 draft.
