UH softball signs six for 2006

Six high school seniors signed letters of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine softball team for the 2006 season, according to head coach Bob Coolen.

They are:

• Justine Smethurst (Victoria, Australia), a 5-foot-8 right-handed pitcher;

• Audrey Andrade (Glendale, Calif.), a 5-10 right fielder/first baseman;

• Courtney Baughman (Valencia, Calif.), a 5-9 right-handed pitcher;

• Julie Franklin (Temple City, Calif.), a 6-1 shortstop;

• Gail Matsushima (Kailua), a 5-10 third baseman from Punahou School;

• Tanisha Milca (Kailua), a centerfielder from Kailua High.



TENNIS

Evans wins Futures

Brendan Evans defeated Wayne Odesnik, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4), to win the Honolulu Futures Tournament yesterday at Diamond Head courts. Evans is an 18-year-old from Key Biscayne, Fla.

The Futures is part of the USTA's developmental Pro Circuit. Players can earn money as well as ranking points.



BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Classic finals winners

Chasity Nobriga and Karin Lundquist defeated Maja Gustin and Tanja Nikolic, 30-25, in the women's final of the Swatch Hawaiian Classic at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.

Eyal Zimet and Stevie Li defeated Brian Chapman and Watt Thongtrakul, 21-16, 21-18, for the men's title.
