Jean Ariyoshi signs copies of her book at cultural center

Head to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, today, for the book-signing "Washington Place: A First Lady's Story," by Jean Ariyoshi.

Ariyoshi's book is filled with vignettes and glimpses into Hawai'i history. The first Asian-American governor's wife in the United States will sign copies from 4 to 5 p.m. and will hold book signings at sites around the Islands through Dec. 17.

The book is published by JCCH and costs $35. Call 945-7633, ext. 27.


Treasure-hunt flick finds the pot of gold

"National Treasure," the Nicolas Cage movie about treasure hunters seeking the ultimate treasure map on the back of the Declaration of Independence, earned $35.3 million in its debut.

"The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie," opened in second place over the weekend with $33.5 million, reports Zap2it.com.

The family-film competition was pretty hot. "The Incredibles," fell from its two-week reign at the top to No. 3 with $26.8 million. Warner Bros.' "The Polar Express" pulled into the box-office station in fourth place with $15.2 million.

"Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," came in at No. 5 with $10.1 million in ticket sales.
