The father of a 3-year-old boy who fell to his death from the lanai of his family's Mo'ili'ili apartment Saturday told detectives he had stepped outside the apartment for a moment while his son, Eddy, was inside, police said.
Lt. Bill Kato, of the Honolulu Police Department's homicide unit, said the boy's father, Edward Reiser, told police he stepped out into the hallway momentarily during a "time out" while he waited for his son to calm down.
When he stepped back in, the boy was gone. He had fallen to the parking lot below the Hono Hale Towers.
Kato said investigators are treating the case "like any other death-from-a-fall case" and are waiting for the results of an autopsy, scheduled for today, before ruling out foul play, although none is suspected.
"We need to have a lot of questions answered and think the autopsy will have a lot to tell us," Kato said.

The driver of the pickup and his front-seat passenger, a man also estimated to be about 18, were taken by Army helicopter to Queen's, where the passenger was listed in serious condition yesterday.
Man caught after fleeing hearing

Police said the man was at a hearing on contempt-of-court warrants when he was told he would be sent to the O'ahu Community Correctional Center. The man became upset and ran from the courtroom about 12:45 p.m., police said.
A female bailiff attempted to stop the man, but police said he shoved her against a wall and fled. Police caught up with the man on the second floor of the building and arrested him without further incident.
The man faces a charge of first-degree escape, police said. The bailiff complained of pain to her shoulder, but was not seriously injured.
