Man dies in collision with pillar

By David Waite

A man was killed today when the compact pick-up truck he was driving veered off the Honolulu-bound lanes of H-1 Freeway near the Hickam and Nimitz Highway off-ramp and struck a concrete pillar supporting a bridge above.

According to initial reports, the collision occurred shortly after 5 a.m. and the man was alone in his truck at the time.

Emergency services workers said the truck appeared to be an older Nissan "Hardbody" model equipped with a camper top, which was torn off in the crash.

The truck's front end and right side were severely damaged and the driver, who was pinned inside, was declared dead at the scene. Construction tools were scattered about the crash site, rescue workers said.

Firefighters from 'Aiea were called to the scene at 5:06 a.m. to provide first aid but found that the driver had been pronounced dead.

Traffic was not rerouted off of the freeway during the investigation, but peak-hour traffic into Honolulu was delayed.

The crash took place near the same area where University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones was injured in a near-fatal crash in February 2001 when the car he was driving strayed off of the freeway and hit a concrete pillar.
