Street project dedication today

The city will hold a dedication for the completion of its $950,000 Maunakea Street improvement project at 1:30 p.m. today in front of the Maunakea Marketplace.

The event will feature fireworks and a lion dance.

The project included new granite sidewalks on Maunakea Street from King to Beretania streets along with new Americans With Disabilities Act accessible curb ramps, new pavement, gutters, street lighting, traffic-signal systems, a fire hydrant and utility boxes.

The city previously made similar improvements to King Street in Chinatown and work on Nu'uanu and Smith streets is being designed.



LEEWARD

Work will limit library's services

The 'Ewa Beach Public & School Library's bookdrop and restrooms will be closed and there will be no designated parking stalls for the disabled from Friday through early February because of renovation work on its front walkway, parking lot and restrooms.

The library, at 91-950 North Road on the campus of James Campbell High School, will remain open during the renovation period but services will be limited. General public parking will also be limited.

KAUA'I

Workshop offers college tips

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Lihu'e Public Library will host a free "College Counseling II" workshop at 6 p.m. Dec. 1.

Robert J. Kvidt, an independent college counselor and former college admissions director, will discuss tips for writing a college essay, obtaining letters of recommendation and interviewing with college admission officers.

Transit plan up for comment

WAILUKU, Maui — The county transportation office will hold a series of meetings to collect comments on the short-range public transit plan being developed by the county and Urbitran Associates.

All meetings will be from 6 to 8 p.m.: Monday, Ha'iku Community Center; Tuesday, Kihei Community Center; Dec. 1, Lahaina Civic Center; Dec. 2, Kahului Community Center; and Dec. 3, Kula Community Center.

Snow forecast at Maui festival

LAHAINA, Maui — Children will be able to romp in 3 tons of snow during Lahaina's banyan tree lighting and snow festival, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 4.

Children ages 2 to 10 can enter the Snow Zone from 5 to 7 p.m. with the donation of canned food for distribution by Light Bringers. The world's largest shave ice will be built on a 6-foot cone starting around 3:30 p.m., and after 5 p.m., families can pose for photos with a 6-foot-tall snowman for a donation of $5.

Activities include a craft fair and free craft ornament and cookie decorating workshops for children from 3 to 5 p.m. The lighting of 2,400 multicolored lights on the historic banyan tree will be at 6:30 p.m.

WINDWARD

Kailua Farmers' Market tonight

The Thursday Night Farmers' Market in Kailua will take place today from 5 to 8 p.m. at Kailua Town Center parking garage, behind Longs Drug Store.

Vendors will have fresh corn, sweet potatoes, sweet onions, asparagus and fresh picked salad greens.

Hot plate dinners will be served by several vendors.

The event is co-sponsored by the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation and Kane'ohe Ranch Company Ltd.

Students gather food for needy

Kalaheo DECA, an association of marketing students at Kalaheo High School has collected more than 2,000 pounds of canned food and some cash to donate to Hawaii Foodbank.

The students will take the food to Hawaii Foodbank today in time for Thanksgiving Day.

The food was collected as a service project at the school and was donated by students, parents, teachers and faculty.
