Kihei teen picked for national forum
Sol Wagner of Kihei, Maui, was selected to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy held last month in Washington, D.C. Having demonstrated academic achievement and an interest in pursuing a career related to national security, Wagner joined approximately 400 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across the nation at the forum.
The curriculum for the forum is based on actual world events, allowing participants to learn from the examples set by previous generations of leaders.
Teacher up for education award
Jill Namba-Mauricio, a second-grade teacher at Kipapa Elementary School, was Hawai'i's nominee for the Alpha Delta Kappa Excellence in Education Award. Alpha Delta Kappa is an international sorority for women educators.
She developed a yearlong reef study unit. When she started the project, she was the only second-grade teacher doing this in her classroom.
Now all five second-grade classes have salt-water aquariums as part of the active learning experience.
Student honored for brain research
The American Psychological Association has awarded Alina Fong-Ichimura, a doctoral student in clinical psychology at Bringham Young University, the Harcourt Student Assessment Award.
Her research explores the human brain's ability to recognize and assign meaning to words. Her findings provide insights into aspects of brain functioning that are exploring cutting-edge territory in brain research.
Salvation Army officers named
The Salvation Army has announced the new officers of its Honolulu Advisory Board and inducted four community leaders as new board members. They are:
David Arita, chairman; Gerry Keir and Bruce Coppa, vice chairmen.
Board members: James Kelley, Lawrence Tseu, Cathy Brogan and Vivian Aiona.
