UH's Sugai on academic soccer team
Advertiser Staff
Midfielder Joelle Sugai, a senior who started every game for the University of Hawai'i soccer team, was named to an academic All-America third team.
The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors' Association. Sugai was the only player with Hawai'i ties named to the teams.
Sugai holds a 3.78 grade-point average in pre-business. Earlier this month, she was named to the District VIII all-academic first team for the second year in a row.
To be eligible, student-athletes must be a starter or key reserve, at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing, and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20.
Sugai, who led the Rainbow Wahine in assists, was named to the all-Western Athletic Conference first team in 2004.
BYUH's Smylie earns PacWest honor
Brigham Young-Hawai'i junior forward Austin Smylie has been named the Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for his performance in three games last week.
Smylie, from Salt Lake City, averaged 16 points and 7.3 rebounds a game in BYUH's games against Winona State, Northwood and No. 14 Louisville.
Smylie scored a career-high 27 points against Louisville and grabbed 10 rebounds.
This is Smylie's third PacWest Player of the Week honor in his career.
